Planning regulations

I am curious/mildly concerned about the renovation work planned for next door so went on my Local Council website to see what planning permission was granted. Nothing came up so I assume any work will be internal or within permitted rules. I knew the bungalow needed a new roof so was expecting that work to be done fairly soon and also possibly a small extension on the rear of the property as many other people have done. I thought that if planning permission was needed that immediate neighbours were contacted to see if they object?

However, the same day that my neighbours moved out, the scaffolders arrived, no issues with that, they did not need to come on my drive although I did move my bins away from the area to help them. Then two huge skips were dropped off, along with a portable toilet, both the skips are larger that the house opposite has on the drive while their roof is done! So I am assuming major work is planned, similar to some recent renovations up the road where the bungalows have had the roof lifted to put in extra bedrooms, large extensions, new windows and walls rendered in white.

I’m hoping to spot the new owners so I can find out their plans although as my living area is at the rear of my bungalow I would have to stalk them from my bedroom to see them! I have always got on well with my neighbours so I have no intention of moaning to them, just a bit curious and would like to know the extent of the work and timeframes as my bedroom is right next to their house! The contractors were working until after 7 o’clock yesterday in the dark wearing head torches but I assume they were just finishing off initial preparations ready for work to begin today.

Does anyone know if I can find out what the plans are without asking the neighbours?

Speak to the local planning office, check if they actually have permission and ask them to investigate, at the least a building regs inspector need to go round.

You might be a lovely neighbour, but lots of people aren't... And the kind of people who get on with their plans without following official channels (on the basis that it's really hard to make someone tear something down once it's up) are also the same kind of people who build things which really impact their neighbours and don't give a shit about it.

If they are those kind of people you need the local authority to step in earlier rather than later!
