Bathroom redo but hate wall to wall tiles

I need to get my bathroom redone. It looks dated but the tiles are not good in some places and the shower door keeps coming off its runners costing money to fix .

My issue is I hate wall to wall tile. I want a bathroom with a bit of character and something that can be changed a little over the years......for example walls that can be painted or maybe some panelling??? The shower would be the newer waterproof panel as I am so over trying to clean shower grout.

I currently have a separate bath and shower within this bathroom but as I'm 60 I am considering just having a bigger more open shower ( currently have a small corner shower ) and doing away with the bath altogether .

I also hate tile floors so if anyine has any suggestions for flooring please. I know it's probably considered a cheaper, non trendy option but I actually prefer padded lino to tile, (the grout , its cold and unforgiving and you are stuck with it).

Anyone not had thestandard bathroom redo ? Any suggestions /tips/ recommendations ?

I have tiles in the main areas and painted walls everywhere else, it means I can change the colour scheme when I choose as the tiles are neutral. I also have Amtico on the floor.

Mine is tiled around the bath and shower to the ceiling then just halfway-ish the rest of the room, at the level of the sink splash back. The floor is bathroom safe LVT

Have your considered lvt or marmoleum for the floor. They are similar to lino but more hard-wearing.
We have half tiling up to dado rail style tiles. They are old fashioned Victorian style ones in dark green with pale pink walls. The top bit of the shower is white tiles. I love it and we can repaint of we want a change. We have some pictures hanging up and a couple of plants.

I am sure there is a more modern looking way of doing something similar if you prefer that style.

Maybe large format marble style tiles up to dado height?

I’ve only got the bath and area behind the sink tiled as I hate all the walls being tiled. The rest of the walls are just plastered and painted. I’ve got Lino on the floor as I prefer it. I’ve just painted the walls and changed the Lino for a new look which is very cheap and easy to do rather than replacing all tiles. Get a white suite with modern taps / fixtures that won’t date and it’ll last you years.

We're a little older than you OP (well maybe quite a bit older...) and we had the bath removed a year or so ago and had a walk-in shower installed. We have tiles in the shower area, and they don't reach the ceiling, and as a splashback behind the washbasin. They are white tiles with a mosaic insert. The other walls have paint specifically for bathrooms and it seems to be working fine. We have vinyl on the floor too, which is no doubt very uncool but I don't care.

I have good quality vinyl/lino (Tapi-Grande) throughout my home, it's soft under foot like carpet but washable like laminate comes in all sorts of patterns and is nothing like the lino of the 80s/90s

My bathroom is small so I have paneling on the walls and a wet room panelling ceiling. Easy to clean and lots of patterns to chose from. Not easy to switch out regularly but you could just do this with changing up towels etc instead to give it a different look.

Thankyou all for the flooring suggestions in particular. I've always hated floor tiles but inherited alot of floor tiles when I bought the house a few years ago. Slowly trying to change that.

I can see the practicality of tile to a point but I have panelling in my ensuite shower with only a few tiles above the sink. As much as I possibly can I won't have tiles. I like the idea of being able to remodel as time goes on.

Thanks again.

I'm a total commitmentphobe and only ever go white or beige, paint the wall any time I like and any colour, i can change that in a heartbeat.

I'm just about to tile just the shower area ONLY with EasyBathroom Casbah. Not the really textured one (there are two). It's lovely, looks pricey and cheap as chips.

White tiles are a horror to shop for I know as you can't see anything online apart from that they are white.

EasyBathroom is fab as you can actually go and physically look at billions of options in showrooms.

Also don't feel the need to tile everything. I have never cared about a basin splashback for example but I only use it for brushing my teeth, so a vinyl based paint in my bathroom other than really splashy areas totally fits the bill and has done for 15 years. It's not massively steamy in my bathroom though or high traffic so don't depend on that opinion!

Agree. Just walk in shower, no bath. Fully tiled is better, get water/condensatiin dripping down part tiled walls.

andIsaid · 03/02/2025 02:59

I do not like too much tile OP so I copied the spirit of this for our new bathroom. It worked very well, especially the different wall textures.

Sorry op, it did not attach the first time.

Bathroom redo but hate wall to wall tiles
ThatFunLemur · 01/05/2025 12:57

I recently just did may bathroom up and was in the same place of not wanting tiles due to grouting etc.

I did the following so I did the following, I painted the walls around the bathroom, so I can change this every few years based on trends, and then for the shower enclosure area I went with Fibo Wall Panels which I have linked here: Fibo Bathroom Wall Panels Link.

For the floors I went with Multipanel vinyl click flooring. I already had some click flooring from another brand in my hallway but find this one to be more superior and its waterproof so cannot complain. Easy to install as well and they have lots of ranges. for flooring. www.multipanel.co.uk/products/vinyl-flooring/. You can find a few places that sell them like: https://www.plumbersmerchantsleicester.com/multipanel-vinyl-click-flooring
https://www.plumbworld.co.uk/multipanel-luxury-click-flooring-758-0000

Hope this helps.

I'm considering this, I also hate tile in general (deathly slippy and I have mobility issue) but I might go for a rough textured outdoor/indoor style sandstone floor, the tiles are so big I think we would only need 2 for our small bathroom.

The other bathroom already has terracotta floor tiles that we will probably just leave as they seem in good condition and would be a pain to remove but I want to switch the walls to paneling and reduce the amount of tiling.
