Contractors and toilet use

We’re having major house renovation work done at the moment (loft conversion and kitchen extension) and said the contractors didn’t need a portaloo and can use our downstairs toilet only (not the main 1st floor bathroom though).

This has been completely fine so far but we’re started having more contractors in and today came home with the main bathroom windows open and someone had clearly taken a number 2.

Are we being ridiculous in asking them not to use the main bathroom? Just don’t want it to get destroyed by dust, dirt and use all day as it’s been recently re- done but can’t work out if we’re being unreasonable.

Wouldn't be happy with this at all.

What's to stop them wandering freely around the rest of your house?!

Our neighbours have had just had a loft conversion that has taken around 6 weeks. They've had a portaloo in the front garden for the duration.
Is there a reason yours don't have one?
We had our garden landscaped last year which took 3 workmen around a week.
They used our downstairs loo which was no issue but a larger project, multiple people over a number of weeks then it would have been a hard no from me.

Simple answer, pay for a portaloo.

I think it probably feels a bit bizarre for people working upstairs doing a loft conversion to have to use a downstairs toilet rather than the nearest one. I think it'd be different if they were using an ensuite.

They're contractors but still people.

Having had building work done on two separate occasions, once with a portaloo and once without I feel able to give this advice to anyone else getting building work done.

Get a portaloo. For the love of god. Just get one.

I sympathise OP. We spent 2yrs renovating a derelict property and lived in a caravan in the garden. Can't imagine living in the house whilst having renovations done! I do tend to agree, that if they are working in the loft, they would use the closest toilet, rather than going down stairs.

We paid for a port-a-loo, but when a toilet was plumbed in, they could use that. We bought a corrugated, plastic flooring to protect the new, wooden floor boards from muddy/dusty boots. The only issue I had was that someone had a horrendous poonami explosion. I realise people get unexpected diarrhoea, but they had somehow shat around the bowl and upwards also. The underside of the seat was covered in poo shatters! They'd made absolutely no attempt to clear the bowl/seat or anything.

We re-hired the port-a-loo the next day 😝

Pay for a portaloo if you’re that bothered.

Couldn’t imagine asking people doing work in my house not to use the loo or only to use a certain one.

Toilets are for using. I would never stop anyone from using mine as long as they leave it clean.

Shock horror someone used a toilet for the purpose of which is it was intended. I mean given that they needed a poo, what did you expect them to do?
