Neff slide & hide: dangerous???

Hello MN, we are renovating and choosing kitchen appliances. I am tempted by the Neff slide & hide but oven will be under counter and the sales assistant said he thought it would be dangerous for young children as it opens so easily and maybe they could fall in?!?! I have scoured other chats on this and can’t find anyone saying this but just wanted to double check with people that actually have one what they think? Have a 1yo snd 4yo. Thank you!

I have one but it's high up. It does open very easily. I think he has a point.

I have a Neff slide and hide though not on the floor and no toddlers. I don't see how they can fall in to that or any other oven. You and they are more likely to bang their legs on a boiling hot door of a conventionally open door down at floor level. The door and oven are great by the way.

Do not get a slide and hide unless it is at waist height. I sell these ovens and they are a pain if down low. You will end up pulling the door off because you will be pulling it at an incorrect angle. They were designed for galley kitchens where space is tight.

I don’t think it will work under the counter. Imo the purpose of hide and slide is to provide easy access without needing to bend/ stretch / put hands up etc. It is very easy to open and you’ve got a huge blast of hot air due to a big space opened at once so yes I can see how it’s dangerous for a family with small kids. it took me quite a while to learn stepping aside when opening it and wait a few seconds. During the cooking it’s great, the door stays cool enough and it’s quiet, even the signal.

Yeah that is a good point. The door does come off for cleaning.

Frazzledhi · 30/01/2025 13:02

Thank you all, seems like back to the drawing board for me.

I have two, low level. I’ve never pulled the door off and no children or pets have ever fallen in.

I love mine!

I have an under counter neff and when I bought mine all their models had two versions, one more expensive with the slide and hide door and a cheaper one with a normal door. All other things were the same. I got a normal door one as I just didn’t see the benefit so much with it being low down. If it had been a higher level oven I could see it being more useful.

chojoko · 30/01/2025 13:49

Just had a go on my one, which is the lower one in an eye level stack. I can see how it could be risky with a kid. Just a note - our other Neff oven has a microwave incorporated and it's bloody useless. Don't understand how a microwave even can be useless, because it's such simple technology, but it is. We're genuinely thinking about getting another microwave because it's basically unusable. But it's annoying because it will probably have to sit in the utility room. Grrrr.

You are lucky. We also repair 2 or 3 of them a month.

gingercat02 · 31/01/2025 08:24

I don't get hide and slide. Am I the only person who uses the oven door (eye level) as a shelf?
I use mine to baste things or stir a casserole or add another ingredient.

Mine (over 10 years old now so maybe different) lets you do that too, it's stable at the point it's fully open and not pushed in.
My second oven incorporates microwave, it's what I mainly use it for and it's fine.

Slide and hide game changer for those of us that are short, with short arms and bad backs!

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/01/2025 08:37

We have a hide and slide oven under the counter and it has been fine for 8 years. Disclaimer - no small children or pets. It is an absolute game changer for those of us with small galley kitchens.

MrsJamin · 31/01/2025 08:37

The hide and slide just seemed not worth it to me. We recently renovated and got a bosch one that's on the WiFi so you can set it to preheat when you're on your way home / on the sofa - much more useful to us! The air fryer mode is also brilliant.

user1471505356 · 31/01/2025 08:38

We have two under counter ovens, only problem can be a blast of steam as you open the door.

Fibrous · 31/01/2025 10:23

Our kitchen is small (mid terrace) and the oven is right by the door from the sitting room, so putting the oven door away is more ergonomic and safer.

Seaside3 · 31/01/2025 10:24

@gingercat02 you're not the only one! I always use the door as a shelf. Sometimes I leave food on there fir people to help themselves to, too. Saves getting something else to protect the worktop.
I can see the benefit if you have mobility issues though.
@Frazzledhi I'd be more inclined to be finding a way of putting an eye height oven in, they're way easier to use than undercounter, and no child can fall in.
