Hello, anyone bought a Kitchen online from either DIY or Units online, without going to their showrooms, they are both a long way from where i live. I have had local quotes, and i know i am looking at a decent shaker, but they coming out so expensive. |Thank you for anyones thoughts and experiences.

You can order door samples from DIY so you can take your samples to the local show rooms and compare.

UnderTheStairs51 · 29/01/2025 13:07

Yes. I did.

They send you a proper door front sample so you can see the colour/style.

It is then very handy to take with you when choosing tiles, paint etc

Katb202060 · 29/01/2025 19:15

Thank you, i have doors samples from DIY , I also like units online, but they charge for their door samples and with so many to choose from, just nervous spending so much money and not seeing the kitchen first.

Bought ours from DIY kitchens. Less then half the price of what Howdens had quoted for the same units. Our fitter said the quality was far superior to Howdens. Also the units were delivered fully assembled - Howdens quoted for flat pack units. So that saved even more money as didn’t have to pay my fitter to assemble them.

Delivery went smoothly. They turned up when they said they would and stacked it all up in my garage for me. No missing parts. My fitter managed to break a door, and it was very easy to get a replacement sent quickly.

And very happy with the kitchen. Have since moved house and a new kitchen is on the cards in the next few years. When the time comes I’ll definitely be buying another kitchen from them.

@Doris86 that's a great review! Did you get your appliances/worktop from them too? We're thinking about using them for our kitchen too

They didn’t have the worktop we wanted so we ordered that from Workstops Direct instead. We shopped around for appliances to get exactly the ones we wanted, from ao.com and other websites.

Everything from elsewhere fitted perfectly into the DIY Kitchens units.

tangobravo · 29/01/2025 21:41

Great to know, thanks so much

We’re buying from Units Online. I went to a local kitchen showroom that I knew stocked the same door supplier so I could take a look at their doors. (I did invite them to quote too, but the guy declined once he got out of me that I had a quote from Units Online and said he couldn’t compete!)

Units Online will send you out decent-sized colour swatches for free as well, if you tell them which ones you’re interested in.

@Doris86 it's good to know DIY kitchen units are assembled- it came up in conversation the other day and I wasn't sure. Howden's do a flat pack range but generally they are fully assembled.

TerrierOrTerror · 30/01/2025 07:21

We have bought online in the last few years from DIY Kitchens and DIY Homefit - two separate houses. Kitchens were very different but would use both companies again.

DIY Homefit were flat packed, fully customisable in terms of dimensions and great value. Samples were very small though. Not sure if they do shaker style, we went for quite a modern sleek look in this kitchen. Delivery was much easier to organise.

DIY Kitchens we have a shaker style kitchen, units all assembled apart from the giant pantry which we requested flatpacked to get it in the house. There have been recent quality issues, ours was fine on delivery but have noticed some paint chipping after only a month which is frustrating. Didn't buy appliances or worktop through DIY. Delivery was frustrating with minimal updates and communication.

In both cases it cost much less than Howdens/Wickes etc.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 30/01/2025 07:26

We have a diy kitchen which we ordered after getting samples etc. It was a brilliant experience and the kitchen still looks fantastic 7 years on. Our fitter was really happy with how easy the units were to fit and very impressed with the quality.

We sourced worktop & appliances separately.

The only other tip is to pay for the most expensive delivery, as then you get a named day etc. People I know who have gone for the cheaper option have had a very frustrating time.

I've never had a kitchen from DIY Kitchens, but recently joined the Facebook group as hoping to do a kitchen renovation in the future. I've seen a lot of posts on there about people having issues with delivery and receiving damaged items. Others seem to absolutely love them, but my overarching feeling was that it's a bit of a lottery and they aren't always great at sorting issues quickly. I realise that items can get damaged in transit, but it sounded like it happens a lot, which made me question the quality of the product and the quality of the packaging. I'll be interested to follow this thread to see what experiences MNers have had.

Saw a beautiful kitchen in a showroom but ordered exactly the same from DIY Kitchens and saved over £7,000. Delivery, etc was excellent!

Katb202060 · 30/01/2025 18:39

That is a good saving, i am looking at Howdens best kitchen and benchmark if anyone has one of those. I like the look of units online too as they use named doors and make their own carcass, i was hopeful just to get a kitchen shop to measure and order a kitchen but the quotes are so high , we also have internal work to be done first which also adds to the cost. Thank you to everyone with your input.

We are lucky we live close enough that we went to the showroom and 3 year later my DIY kitchen still looks brand new much better quality than Howdens and agree with a poster above worth paying the extra for named day delivery

Katb202060 · 08/02/2025 23:47

Hi still undecided on kitchen, got a good quote from Benchmarx anyone recommends. looking at Marlowe. thanks

Ours is from DIY. We were able to afford more units for the large space we have than if we'd used another supplier. The quality is excellent. DP would not buy without seeing the stuff in person so we did go to their showroom and he was impressed.

We bought appliances online from a number of suppliers and got oak worktops elsewhere and the composite island top from another supplier.

DIY do a design service and they will also check you have everything you need against your plan.

Two of our friends also bought from DIY having seen our kitchen. Both very different styles and designs and in different parts of the country.

Katb202060 · 24/02/2025 22:37

DIY is too far for us to go, hubby prefer too buy nearer to home, had a quote from Magnet loved the kitchen but the price was very high, still looking at MKM, also got a price for wentworth high price but lovely kitchen , I just cannot spend £30k plus. Anyone have any ideas.

I visited DIY Kitchens recently and was surprised that all the doors have a very plasticky look and feel, even the solid timber ones, so I can't work out why they're so popular. The solid timber doors at Howdens look and feel like timber. I was fully expecting to prefer DIY Kitchens but we're now thinking we'll go with Howdens instead.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 02/03/2025 17:23

That has not been my experience. You can order door samples from DIY if you're not able to get to the showroom.

Katb202060 · 02/03/2025 20:18

I have. DIY sample doors and i thought that to, or maybe i hadnt ordered the correct doors, looking at Magnet and MKM which are symphony, the cost is not what i expected for a decent kitchen , haven't ruled out Howdens either.

I compared the most expensive timber ones from DIY Kitchens against the cheaper coated MDF and they looked and felt exactly the same. The timber ones were thicker and a bit more substantial feeling but the feel and texture of the finish was identical. I would guess the timber ones will probably last longer but I hate the plasticky coating they use.

We visited the Howdens Expo at the weekend (big warehouse sized showroom in Howden, East Yorkshire) and were amazed at the design options. It's well worth a visit if you're close enough, they have one in Northamptonshire too. We were set on Ikea (have had two brilliant Ikea kitchens) but we'll be going with Howdens now (cost-dependent I guess).
