These are on the ground floor, but we also have some small gaps caused by normal movement (been checked out!).

Any advice?

You can scrape that out and reapply the putty or you could find a competent handy person who could do it. Keeping the windows regularly painted should make it less likely to happen again.

I've got the same problem. It's not putty though, it's some kind of plastic seal. I was thinking of removing and putting putty in though unless someone knows the product to use. I haven't investigated yet as it is a job I thought I'd do in a few months.

I would call up a window company that specialises in misted windows or broken locks and ask for a quote. Sometimes the effort and time in sourcing the right product and attempting to apply it without the correct tools is seriously not worth it. A few years ago I had three full windows resealed within ten minutes for twenty quid. He had the right tools, the experience, and the item, and it would probably have taken me all day with lots of sweat, tears and swearing 😬

Any glazier can sort that out for new. Ut needs new seals.

That's great. Thanks for the advice. Sounds a cheap fix too.

If you want to do it super cheaply DIY you can buy replacement window seals from screwfix. I did this for my windows a few years ago and haven't had any issues since.

Thanks. Are they easy to fix?

Its not putty, its a rubber seal. Op it has just perished, you can buy new seals easily enough. The glass may or may not have to come out, depends on the way its fitted in.

It's a rubber seal not putty. Windows are UPVC so don't require painting.

Replacing the seals is a relatively simple job which a window doctor could carry out in a matter of minutes.
Biggest problem about doing it DIY is that lifting out the sealed unit can be tricky (especially if it is stuck into place) and they can be heavy, nothing that can't be overcome but if you are unsure or not confident, just get someone to do it (but agree the price first).
Plenty of window repair companies out there and this is their bread & butter.

Geneticsbunny · 28/01/2025 13:28

It's difficult to tell from that pic whether they are wooden or uPVC but i will bow to greater knowledge. In which case ignore my previous advice.
