please help..
we had the photos taken for our house this week and I think the drawing room looks,to put it mildly ‘Boring.’ I love my wallpaper and can’t replace sofas so need some ideas to inject some life..
the room has original oak panelling and shutters..

it’s a very traditional Georgian house so nothing outrageous. Although I’d quite like to see people’s ideas for creativity.

i think I’m going to be shopping this week…

It's a lovely room but it looks bare and drab. It needs some softening- rug, art, books, cushions/throws in colours, fruit bowl?

mathanxiety · 25/01/2025 20:16

Take the dull blankets off the couches.

Put a nice stack of books on the coffee table.

A few standard lamps would be nice.

Large potted palms/ rubber plants would give the room some life.

A few pops of red would look warm and inviting - cushions, decorative items on the mantelpiece, a red rug.

I know you like your wallpaper, but if I were looking for a property like yours, I'd be considering how much it would cost to take it off and redo the walls. I'd find that beige very dreary.

mynameiscalypso · 25/01/2025 20:18

I would change out the throws on the sofa for lighter colours - cream/grey textures - and then maybe add some plants. A rug would be nice but I don't think it's essential. It looks like a lovely room.

mathanxiety · 25/01/2025 20:20

A few MORE standard lamps (correction).

I think you need a big, bright rectangular rug with a traditional / folk pattern. A red would be lovely, as would teal.

Greenbottle123 · 25/01/2025 20:20

I think PPs have said it all but it’s stunning

Rictasmorticia · 25/01/2025 20:23

Throws and cushions in soft greens and pale yellow. Fresh Flowers in burnt orange and yellow.. Get rid of the ugly throw on the sofa. A big statement table lamp. I would not use rugs.

Beautiful room. Pick three colours and work them through in LARGE rug under coffee table, four large cushions on each couch and the throws, No need to spend a fortune, go to Home Sense or H&M home etc

Yes - go large.

Rictasmorticia · 25/01/2025 20:26

Don’t use cheap curtains ugh. No curtains for me. Get a few expensive looking things. The room is beautiful. A coffee set on the table and a posh magazine so that it looks like someone is living there.

Chuchoter · 25/01/2025 20:27

You might love the wallpaper but others won't.

I would paint over in a neutral cream colour and add throws to the sofas.

seven201 · 25/01/2025 20:29

Mirror above fireplace, big rug under coffee table, tall plants, nicer throws, cushions, candles. I need to do all these things to my house too!

Scrabbelator · 25/01/2025 20:29

Beautiful room, op!
I would pull the sofa near the window in towards the centre, nearer the stove. And I would put a huge rug there, big enough to go under both sofas.
But you really don't need to do anything; the beauty of all that wood and the large windows will do the selling for you. It's stunning!

KindleAndCake · 25/01/2025 20:30

Just what others have said really, some soft furnishings, a rug under the coffee table, a large mirror over the fire place, and some cushions on the sofas. That will make a huge difference straight away.

Completelyjo · 25/01/2025 20:31

Why are you going shopping?
It’s a complete waste of money to go and buy some tat for EA photos. The room is the room, a few cushions or whatever isn’t changing it for someone buying the property.

Ate there any close-up photos, that show clearly the wallpaper and functioning shutters? I like the room a lot, but looking at it on my phone, none of the detail really shows well. I agree that putting something on the chimney breast would be good.

Yes, there are, it's photographed really nicely. I like original shutters.

This. Don't do anything. It's a be beautiful house, it'll sell itself.

Growlybear83 · 25/01/2025 20:34

I agree with the suggestions for a nice bright rug and a big wooden mirror over the fireplace would look lovely.

Growlybear83 · 25/01/2025 20:34

And curtains!

AndrinaAdamosballetshoes · 25/01/2025 20:35

I know you love the wallpaper but it’s completely incongruous to the style of the house, plus it’s yet another shade of brown in a brown room it needs a wallpaper in keeping with the era and grandness of the room or, if you don’t want to re paper, paint the walls in a heritage colour that highlights the panelling and shutters, the leather sofas will never look right so no suggestions other than replace them which I understand you don’t want to do so add rugs, cushions, lamps and artwork to make it look more inviting.

GivingUpFinally · 25/01/2025 20:38

While I agree with most of the above. Be realistic. If you're selling, I wouldn't be spending a bundle trying to do up the room.

But I would say a large mirror and some plants would make a huge difference. With the plus, that they can easily be moved and used in another property.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 25/01/2025 20:39

It's a lovely room with so much potential. It just looks a bit cold and unnviting. More soft furnishing, especially as you have leather sofas. It's a decent size room and could easily take some lovely big plants to bring it to life.

Whydoeseveryonewanttoargue · 25/01/2025 20:40

Area rug. Lamp. Art. Cushions. Throws. Plants.

And add some colour! That is what is making this room dull.

KnittingOnEmpty · 25/01/2025 20:40

A large dark green leaved lush looking tall plant or two and rug under coffee table.

AndrinaAdamosballetshoes · 25/01/2025 20:44

As a caveat to my post, it’s a really beautiful room even if you do nothing to it, the features and grandness will sell it, and as shown on here most people can see what your house offers without you having to do too much.

ShyMaryEllen · 25/01/2025 20:50

It's a lovely room, but would be improved by making it look more lived-in, I think. I agree about a large rug, a mirror above the fireplace and art on the walls. Do you know which house you are buying? As far as possible, if you are buying new for the photos, have that house in mind, so you can use them when you get there.

I would think about moving the sofas closer together, so it looks like people can socialise more easily, and maybe have a bookcase and accent chair between the windows to create a reading area and use the space moving the sofa has created. Put a small table there too, with a couple of books on it.

Bring in texture with fabric - whether cushions or throws, and definitely dress the windows. What does the ceiling light on the upper right of the photo illuminate? Obviously as you are selling there is no point in getting rid of it, but can you put something under it (assuming there is nothing there already) so it looks less of an afterthought?

As others have said, don't buy tat. I'm guessing the house is expensive? Cheapening it with IKEA art and some Yankee candles is not the way to go. You don't need to spend a lot on throws and cushions though.

And lighting. Lots of it. Pooky sell rechargeable table lamps and was lights that that don't need wiring or chased walls. They can add atmosphere and you can take the table lamps with you.
