New Kitchen - what finish on doors??

Please help wise mumsnetters. I'm driving myself slightly mad.
Ordering new kitchen and I can't decide on wood grain finish or smooth.
I've read things that say wood grain now old fashioned (I'm sure it isn't if buying high end !) but others suggest that smooth look looks cheap Confused
I've looked at so many things I'm incapable of deciding which I prefer so any thoughts welcome.
I'm going with a local kitchen company. Price similar to Howdens / Magnet. Thank you !

(When I say high end I mean companies like Neptune / Tom Howley etc. Way outside my budget.)

I went for wood grain because when the dark blue (yes I know but I love it) smooth panel was pulled out of the rack it was covered in finger prints and the wood grain was not. The wood grain was a higher spec. So it probably depends on the colour. Could you borrow a sample to test?

Good point about the finger prints.
I'm blaming it on the menopause that I've suddenly become completely incapable of making a decision !

It never would have crossed my mind if I hadn’t seen it and I so glad it did because it would have annoyed me. Wood grain does seem to stay cleaner looking

I personally don't like the wood grain look, feels really fake and plasticky to me. I've got cheap cream matt shaker but it doesn't mark. Very easy to wipe (once a couple of weeks!). I'm not sure how it would be in a darker colour though.

Go with what you like. See if you can see a whole kitchen in the woodgrain and if you still like it then go for it!

Ps. I combined with an oak wood kitchen secondhand so I do have real 'woodgrain', which I love.

High end brands like Devol, Neptune etc are flat with no grain (but hand painted). It's the type of wood they use. Don't ask me anything else I'm not an expert 😅 but have spent a long time looking at kitchens! It's personal preference though of course, there isn't a wrong answer!

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 24/01/2025 21:52

Just to add I think it depends on the look you're going for. Do you want that shaker, old fashioned, brass fittings, marble look? Like Devol, Neptune etc. Then probably go smooth. If you're going for a look that is different to that then go wood grain!

I went with a mixed materials look, so wood grain on top and smooth white on the bottom.

JJJJuniper · 24/01/2025 22:05

This is all really helpful - thank you.
Also useful to know that devol / Neptune etc are flat. I do really like their look but it's difficult to see the finish via websites / social media.
