Where do you buy reasonably priced art?

Sorry if this is a daft question.

I'd like to buy some artwork for our bedroom, I'm picturing some charcoal drawings, perhaps of a somewhat romantic nature, like drawings of a couple but really subtle outlines if that makes sense, not really 'obvious' or cheesy.

My town doesn't have an art gallery or anything like that and even then I'm not sure if I'm being a bit too specific?!

I have bought original art from artfinder.com with no issues. It has artists from around the world, and you can search for themes.

Worsthousebeststreet · 24/01/2025 19:46

If you're happy with a print rather than original, try the online shops of museums.

There's also something called the affordable art fair I think and there's an art school with an online platform for students to sell their work but I can't remember which!

I've found once you start googling around, relevant things will pop up in your Facebook or Insta adds which is where I found these places but only ever window shopped as we're renovating atm so no spare cash!

I bought some stunning artwork from The Green House Art for my living room and am going to buy more for my bedroom - check it out :-)

A canvas and some paint.

lopyrs · 24/01/2025 20:03

@Papricat ha, my cat would do better with a paintbrush than me!

  • Look on Instagram. Lots of visual artists showcase their work there. Just do a search for #contemporarypainting
  • Have a look at Saatchi art website https://www.saatchiart.com/en-gb
  • Check out artists local to where you live and see if they do open studio days where you can go in and check out their works
  • Art schools degree shows are a good place to buy affordable art.

Basically you have lots of options :)!

Prints or originals?

Prints I buy from Etsy, TKMaxx, FY!. TKMaxx comes already framed, the others I tend to use IKEA frames.

JC03745 · 24/01/2025 21:06

I've sometimes picked up things are local markets or antique fairs.

Possibly not the style you are after, but I'll be buying this years Christmas cards from this site, which supports artists who paint with with the mouth or feet!

Go on Instagram and look up #artistsupportpledge
It was set up to help artists during Covid but has continued. Loads of artists sell affordable artwork there for under 200 quid or so.

Or go to the degree shows of your local art schools and see if there's anything you like/commission something from an artist you like :)

RA summer exhibition also has something for everyone!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 24/01/2025 21:14

I got some lovely pieces from SOTA marketplace - I came across them through a work event, they're an online art gallery that take smaller commission and pay their artists fairly. sotamarketplace.co/?srsltid=AfmBOoqO2FDI-p-xnovNrfohOjVvp9ifNAYOJDauX3bC0a2NXLB7IYaQ

Affordable Art Fair?

drsheldoncooperwhooper · 24/01/2025 21:19

Great selection of quality prints from here https://www.kingandmcgaw.com

We went to a couple of shows at the Royal Academy Schools some years ago and bought stuff we liked by the 2nd year students. I don’t think they were very expensive and some of the students go on to have a decent career so the work increases in value too.

I second this website.
They frame their prints beautifully too.

LittleMonks11 · 24/01/2025 21:30

Affordable Art Fair if you're near enough to get to one.

hopsalong · 24/01/2025 21:42

EBay!

Sweetpea1989 · 24/01/2025 21:50

King mcgaw, great quality but not hugely expensive.

Beamur · 24/01/2025 21:53

Local art fairs/, open studios
Art colleges - often have a shop inside the college. I bought some really nice prints/wrapping paper when looking round with DD on an open day
Instagram?

Artfinder is great, I've bought a few paintings over the years and have always been pleased. Do check sizes though!

Beachbodyready · 25/01/2025 00:29

Based on your description look at Indie Matharu (In:diem) on Facebook or instagram. You can buy her hand drawn pictures at very affordable prices and if you don't like any of her existing drawings she does commissions. I've bought from her and her drawings look like photos!

Or if you've got a bigger budget you might like My Dog Sighs. He's about to release an image for Valentine's Day which is available as an original or print

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 25/01/2025 02:04

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition if you’re near London.

GBooArt · 25/01/2025 02:25

On my Instagram page ;-)
