Wardrobes - how tall?

If you have very high ceilings, how do you choose the height of the wardrobes? My ceiling is 3,7 m. I think full height would not be very easy to use, and it would be very expensive to make too. Is it better to leave the standard Pax height (2,4 m) or add a box on top, to go say to 3 m? The current size looks a bit small in this room. I am aware I would need a ladder to reach the top, but of course that woudlk be for storage, not daily use. I am planning to uprade the Pax with custom made side panels and doors, so this should be possible to incorporate.

There will be two wardrobes on both sides of the fireplace, and a run of wardrobes on the wall opposite (these probably will just have shelves and drawers and will be 40 cm, not 60 deep).

I don't see a lot of ideas on Pinterest or elsewhere for not fully built-in wardrobes (which are lovely and I would certainly have them in a different room).

I suggest you draw the room and the wardrobes to scale and see which version is the most pleasing to your eye and budget.

Always floor to ceiling or otherwise the tops are dust harbourers

3.7m tall wardrobes ? That would be quite odd looking, honestly and wouldn't be very practical

I think I've seen some wardrobe systems that have hanging rails that are far too high when stored and door closed, but pivot out and down when you need to get stuff. Living made easy is an example (I'm not promoting!). I guess people who make fitted wardrobes will have something similar to offer.

I'm in a very similar position op. I know what I want it to look like in my head. From the diy pages I frequent, a lot of designers/joiners rave about building the structure from the metod kitchen cabinets instead of pax.

Oh that's good to know, @CombatBarbie ! Maybe we can share ideas! I also think I know what I want it to look like. I have also seen advice about Metod, and actually the shallow run of cupboards would be made of these (because shelves do not need to be 60 cm deep).

That's very good advice @Whataretalkingabout . I will try to do it in an app I used to design a bathroom; this way it will be to scale.
@SquareRootVeg I know this system, it is very useful. Still, full height is too much even if I used it, just too tall to look good and not practical, as Whataretalkingabout says.

We have high bedroom ceilings and it annoys me that the fitted wardrobes (installed by the previous owners) don't go all the way to the ceiling! They did a loft conversion so we have no attic, so we store things like suitcases and Christmas decorations on top of the wardrobes. It would be so much nicer to be able to close the door on it!

Caspianberg · 23/01/2025 08:38

I wouldn’t go 3.7m no

Large room heights I have seen either add a few large Fortum and mason type hamper baskets up there so they look nice from distance and contain any storage. Or add art work to the space above wardrobes so it looks like it’s purposely like that

IKEA have a fabulous online tool for building pax wardrobes. Like CAD for wardrobes. Good luck

PinkCamelias · 23/01/2025 11:08

I understand that if you need more storage @landedowl . We have the attic so storage space is not an issue (at least that!).
Yes @Caspianberg it is too high, it would look grotesque... And there's coving and moulding on the ceilings and top of the walls that would be obscured.
@babasaclover I know, I used this tool to design my current pax wardrobes, but it does not let you extend them beyond 240 cm. I will need to use another tool for that.
