I've viewed a propery with it, but have no experience with it.

How good is it?

Efficient?

Cheap or dear compared to gas boiler + rads?

All thought very welcome, thank you.

Very expensive. My parents have it in the property they bought a few years ago but do not use it due to the cost. They had radiators put in the room to heat it.

Expensive to run, depending on the size of the house and space.

We had some in a bathroom that was lovely and cozy and perfect.

Then some in a huge open plan space that took forever to heat up the space and you had to leave it on to get the benefits, so it cost more than a radiator and a log burner combo.

Is it a wet or an electric system? Wet system is very good and comparable to having radiators - I love it. An electric system is very expensive to run given the current electricity rates.

Some people really love it. I hated it. It didn’t help that it was run by a badly installed ashp. I’ve got a different heat source and radiators installed as well now so don’t use the underfloor.
I didn’t like the length of time it took to change temperature or that it wasn’t warm enough in the evenings but too hot overnight. It took nearly 24 hours for the floors to heat up
I like the almost instant heat of radiators, mine take half an hour to heat up because I’m on solid fuel, my parents on oil is less than 10 mins to the house feeling warm. It’s also really handy for drying laundry, because solid fuel runs constantly the house is always warm and dry so it doesn’t cause any damp issues.
The temperature can be raised in the evenings and it can cool overnight.

We have wet UFH throughout with an air source heat pump. It's very cost effective.

bananapalmtree · 20/01/2025 19:36

It depends on the type. Electric is very expensive. Wet (water pipes laid under the floor) is very good in my experience and comparative to radiators.

TallNeckedGiraffe · 20/01/2025 19:39

We have wet ufh in large kitchen area with wood floors. It’s fantastic. Not expensive to run.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/01/2025 19:39

Unless it's wet give it a miss- I've just had a £680 ( month) electric bill and our downstairs isa mix of electric UFH and bits of gas radiators - it's impossible not to have it on as it's far too big an area to leave it off and gets really cold with out it and due to thick floor tiles doesn't get warm unless it's set at 24 degrees - it's a rented house so can't change it ( a lovely one at that) but for 4 months a year the village atrocious- maybe if it was just a bathroom etc would be fine

slidingsideways · 20/01/2025 19:53

It was a non negotiable for me in our renovation. We have wet system IFH and I love it. The house never feels cold like it used to, even when the heating has been off most of the day. It's just a more even, ambient temperature. I love having no radiators to plan furniture round. I love sitting in a tiled floor with my toddler and not feeling like it's cold. So glad we did it. I'd hate to go back to radiators now if we moved. We ripped out the old floorboards and added a solid floor with lots of insulation which helps I think. I don't find it any different cost wise to radiators.

Thanks for all the replies.
I'll be giving this property a miss - forgot to mention that the place was really cold despite the "heating".

It's an absolute pain in the backside if it goes wrong.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/01/2025 23:38

@Georgyporky probably because it's electric UFH and they have discovered like me that it's extortionate if used over a big area - so are keeping it much lower than needed ( ours is rented so I can't change it)
