Woodburner installation disaster!

Just having a moan. Company came out to install a woodburner for us this morning and discovered that the chimney breast isn't deep enough but only after putting a bloody great hole in the wall.

They are saying it wasn't foreseeable but turns out the chimney breast is 10cm too shallow, they came out and did a survey on it at the start of December so it really should have been picked up.

They are now reinstating back to how it was (fully flush chimney breast with no opening) and will pay for redecoration. Gutted we can't have the fire and also no idea what to do with that wall now.

Also it's going to look shit for our house warming party on Saturday 😔.

What isn’t deep enough? Is it the gap down the chimney for a flue? Or the apperture they’ve opened? I will assume the former not the latter as stoves can be free standing, as long as the hearth meets required depth around the hearth

Not sure I understand either, what is it not deep enough for, a flue? As you can get slim wood burners and inset ones.

A shallow fireplace would only effect the install of an inset stove, your vitreous pipe from the stove can go into the stainless flue via an offset adaptor, the offset is normally 45' and can be of variable length, the wood burner then is more in the room, so you need a deeper hearth.

If that wasn't possible the Vitreous pipe can go into a twin wall flue & go up the chimney breast and enter into the chimney higher up.

Both of these may mean combustible material distances will change.

The only thing that is more problematic is a chimney stack that cannot take a 6inch flue, but 5 inch ones are available, with a stove to match.

If you still want a woodburner, get another installer...

They sound like amateurs….. can you put something infront of the mess to hide it during the party ? A big picture or something?

This is what we are left with! The company is Wirral Fires who I think are all above board (but I certainly won't be recommending them now). They said there isn't sufficient room for the flue (by 10cm). We could actually see almost straight through to our adjoining neighbours house, if they hadn't stopped then it could have been a lot worse. They did mention work arounds but said they really weren't sure that they would work given the tight space. Husband and I are now researching inset bioethanol fires.

We only moved in here 2 months ago so was quite distressing to see a bloody great hole in the wall for no reason!

It gives a nice extinction rebellion vibe though. Very much on trend in the leafy postcodes down south.
