Would you count this bedroom as a small double or a large single?

Neither - looks like a small single to me.

Pigeonqueen · 19/01/2025 08:51

That would be a single for me.

Namechange13101 · 19/01/2025 08:54

Single

Alwayswonderedwhy · 19/01/2025 08:54

Definitely a single.

pwaow · 19/01/2025 09:05

Interesting.

It's currently used as a spare room with a double bed and single wardrobe in it.

Single.

My smallest room is 2.7x 3.3 and whilst it fits a double, there’s little room for anything else like walking or wardrobes.

People aren’t stupid, they’ll walk in and know it’s small.

We viewed a house last year that’s advertised as a 4 bedroom house with 3 doubles. Honestly each bedroom was tiny and we preferred lots of 3 beds with actual doubles.

Talipesmum · 19/01/2025 09:11

Single, and not a particularly large one.
I can see it’s possible to fit a double bed in there but it would be quite a squeeze especially if you’ve actually got someone in that bedroom with desk, bookshelf etc.

I don’t think room sizes should be classified by “can you just about fit this size bed in there, regardless of comfort and other furniture”.

That said, it makes more sense to describe as “three bedroom” rather than specifying it’s definitely a single or double.

pwaow · 19/01/2025 09:12

It's definitely a small room with a double bed in it, house was marketed as 4 bedrooms originally, but double/single wasn't specified.

As it's only used as an occasional spare bedroom it's fine.

It wouldn't work as a permanent bedroom really.. maybe for a toddler.

It's definitely a PITA changing the bedding!

Someone once told me that the minimum size for a double room is 9ft x 9ft. Seems about right

It looks lovely OP. If you have to specify, I’d say “single/double” which tells people it’s basically a single but you could fit a double bed as per your picture. TBH people ought to just look at the room sizes rather than interpretations from estate agents!

INeedAnotherName · 19/01/2025 09:31

A single bedroom should fit a single bed, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers comfortably. If you can't then it's a box room/nursery/study.

If you can fit a double bed, 2x wardrobes and 2x chest of drawers then it is a double bedroom. It really is that simple.

Based on the room shape and size I would say it is a normal single.

Seeline · 19/01/2025 11:08

Under modern standards, that's not even big enough to count as a single. It has a floor area of 6.4 SQM. Standards require 7.5 SQM.

I'd count it as a single, not a large single.

LindaDawn · 19/01/2025 12:46

I would say its a normal size single.

Spacie · 19/01/2025 13:06

If one side of the double bed has to be against a wall then it's a single.

Seeline · 19/01/2025 13:06

Is that a full size double bed? Or a 3/4?

pwaow · 19/01/2025 13:30

Its a full sized double

I'd count it as a small double. Out of curiosity, can anyone link the bedroom size thread please? I can't find it and currently have a similar question about whether 3x4m bedrooms are fine.

TickingAlongNicely · 19/01/2025 13:59

My DD has a double bed, and a fitted wardrobe in her room. It is still definitely a single bedroom.

I think you would need space on both sides of the bed to count it as a double.

Agree
although these are guidelines

A double bedrm should be 12m2
A single bedroom should be 7.5m2

These are the British standards as recommended

So the room isn’t a single
