WWYD re moving sitting room door

Hi,

Would you move this door in the sitting room so we can get a corner sofa? We love the idea of a corner sofa and family film nights but can't fit it at the min as the door into the kitchen is in the corner of the room.
But we could move it at a cost of £1,000 further along the wall, the only thing putting me off Is the mess and upheaval whilst it's being moved but then is it worth it?

I doubt you would get the money back, but if it is feasible and won’t have a negative effect on either room, ( and you’re not contemplating a move) then I can’t see why not.

If it would improve the way you use the room and the flow of it then I'd do it. It does depend on what it impacts on the other side of the wall though.

Why cant the L be at the window end.....or away from the wall where the door is - would iy be better to have a couple of large footstools as everyon will want to be facing the TV wall straight on rather than at 90 degrees?

double chaise is the correct term....not footstools

I would, and did something similar. We were doing major renovations though and not living in the house at the time. Yes, dust will get everywhere, but it can be cleaned up.

Start looking at corner sofa sizes though, so you know how far across the door needs to go. Note that the exact door location might be dictated by the wood work within the wall. We took months to find the correct size for our corner sofa. Something not SO large it overpower the room, but also wasn't too small for our needs. No idea what it was so tricky, but if you start looking now, you'll have any idea of where you'd ideally have the door.

No. Id just change the way that the door hangs ( and move the light switch ) and get another smaller sofa and a footstool to go along that back wall.

Remember if you move a doorway you will have to redecorate and replace the carpet in both rooms.

Thank you, we're also having the kitchen done but the wall on the other side has a radiator on which is getting replaced anyway so he can just flip it around.
I just thought it feels a bit at the moment like we sit in a"corridor" for the walkway between the front door and the kitchen so I think it would be good to move it but it's the thought of the extra dust and mess 😭 but as long as it's worth it then it will be ok

The door into the sitting room from the front door is on the window side so we have the gap between the 2 doors to fit a sofa in which is ok but I wondered whether moving the door further along the wall would make the room flow better and have a corner sofa in instead of a 3 seater and an armchair. Although sometimes it's nice to sit on the armchair alone away from everyone 🤣

The room would look so much better with the door moved and as you’re renewing the kitchen it’s a perfect time.
You’re going to have some dust from the kitchen work so just make sure you cover everything as much as you can with decorating sheets.
The answer is, yes! It will be worth it 😊

Newbie2025 · 18/01/2025 18:40

Thank you, that is literally the other option we're thinking of, the electrician Is coming for the kitchen anyway so can move the light switch at the same time and we thought the door could open the other way against the wall, which obviously is a cost saving as the wall is load bearing so is quite costly to move ☹️ and then floor repairs etc.
So would open the way the blue drawing is where the door would open up against the wall.

Do it! You will be much more comfortable without the corridor effect. And the traffic going in front of the "no go" area in front of the fire anyway.
It won't be that much dust. They can put up sheets to contain it. And anyway short term pain for comfort gain.... Do it 😊
