Knotty pine kitchen - help!

ohsitdownnextome · 17/01/2025 14:05

The house I’m buying has a fantastic kitchen diner with a peninsula. I don’t think any of it needs replacing. But the units are peak 90s knotty pine and the wall tiles are ‘rustic’ and it’s all quite orange.

What’s the cheapest way to update it all please? I’m going to be spending a lot of time in this part of the house. My total redocorating budget is only £30k so I can’t replace the kitchen.

Can knotty pine be sprayed?

Thanks in advance.

Paint the tiles (lots of paint for this just pick good quality)
remove top cabinets as they look old fashioned, add some shelving.
replace doors on the base cabinets and paint a light colour

It might be successfully sprayed - or it might we worth looking at the companies that do some sort of vinyl wrapping -it may give you a more uniform finish?

SusanSHelit · 17/01/2025 14:08

I wouldn't spray the cupboards but then I'm quite partial to wooden fittings of almost any description.

I'd paint the island a pale colour and update the flooring to something a bit less orange. That way you could keep the character of the lovely wooden cupboards but brighten the space up loads.

I think the orange island is really the biggest eyesore here. The kitchen has got the potential to be really beautiful though

Could be very easily painted. If it’s solid pine, just sand, treat the knots and paint. Paint the tiles. Rug for floor if you can afford to replace or overlay sheet vinyl as cheap.

Thanks all. I am looking at this differently now. It’s the orange island and the tiles that are most yuck, not the cupboards themselves.

What colours do we think for the island and wall tiles? Maybe I keep the floor tiles if their orangeness can be minimized somehow.

I feel like it’s as if Donald Trump were a kitchen….so orange!

rustoleumcolours.co.uk/shop-by-room/kitchen/ do great kitchen paint. (And front door paint!)

christmashelp24 · 17/01/2025 17:23

I love it, but I recently painted my kitchen cabinets orange 😂

I recommend the rustoleum kitchen cabinet paint though, goes on like a dream.

Have a look at Colourfullkitchens they are near Brighton but the website will show you what you can do with all kinds of old wooden furniture including kitchens and garden furniture then you can find one near you. Unless you happen to be near Brighton 😜.

I think you're really lucky that the panels are square edged - a lot of kitchens from the 80s/90s have arches at the top and they just look like an old kitchen that's been painted. Yours will look much more contemporary with a paint job and some different handles. I'd invest money in the floor and avoid tile paint, like an old 80s kitchen, the tiles always look painted. The ones you have are fairly neutral and appear to be in good condition - they will be far less obvious if you paint your cabinets a similar cream colour.

ohsitdownnextome · 17/01/2025 20:16

Great point about the square edges @everythingcrossed you have such a good eye. I don’t see such detail, I just see pine and orange. Are you a designer?

Leave the floor terracotta is on its way back. Paint the units cream, paint the tiles and the grout on the wall - it looks a bit grotty - maybe bleach might help,

PlanetJungle · 17/01/2025 21:19

something like this

You can refresh the wall tiles with a white grout touch up pen. Or cover them with painted tongue and groove panelling.
Painting the peninsula and other cabinets navy or dark teal will tone down the visual impact of the orange floor, eg. Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue or Hague Blue.
You could cover the floor tiles with wood flooring to match existing.

soupfiend · 17/01/2025 21:32

I would get rid of the island and I would just paint the cabinets top and bottom

No way would I have shelving as suggested by a previous poster, dusty, got to keep it tidy, gets tacky with kitchen grime, cant fit as much on them as in a cupboard

Ilovemyshed · 17/01/2025 21:35

I dislike the cupboards and the island (and the tiles and worktop).

Are the tiles real on the floor, or lino?

I would paint the cupboards a soft sagey grey/ green, change the tiles for plain ones and add a new worktop.

Ooh yes I was thinking stiffkey or inchyra blue to balance the orange floor.

Pine takes paint beautifully, those units will come up great. A pale cool colour green/grey/ blue will tone down the floor. I would be more tempted to put in new wall tiles.

mjf981 · 18/01/2025 03:48

Paint paint paint.
Cabinets, tiles, walls.
Then spend the money on a new countertop - a decent quality light coloured quartz is what I would do.

mjf981 · 18/01/2025 03:49

You can also tile over tiles if you prime the (original) tiles first. Cheaper and less hassle than removing them.

ohsitdownnextome · 18/01/2025 09:33

Painting kitchen wall and floor tiles and cabinets …are these jobs I could ask a generalist decorator to do? I’m going to have the other rooms repainted anyway.

Or would I need a specialist kitchen decorator because the cabinets/island would need to be wrapped or sprayed instead of hand painted?

I’m thinking hague blue for the cabinets and island, dove pink for the wall tiles, then quartz worktop overlay if funds stretch to this.

Wish I could save by painting myself but I’m not good at it.

I would sand down the units and then do a white wash over them so you have a beachy feel. Let the knots come through. I definitely would not replace with shelving unless I wanted to hate my life.

ohsitdownnextome · 18/01/2025 09:36

Has anyone ever used tile decals btw? I could probably manage these. Waste of money/gimmick? Saw these on Etsy
