Cheapest way to soundproof a floor ?

Hello, need to sound proof the living room floor, downstairs talk loudly and bang around.

We currently have a large rug ,but the sides of the room are bare flooring. Would wall to wall rug with underlay actually help?

We could eventually have proper carpet down, it's just hassle for now as the place is so small and the room is rammed with furniture.

What else can we do ? Thank you.

Hi, eventually a fitted carpet with an extra layer of insulation will work wonders. I’m not sure it would be much less hassle to put down a wall to wall rug with underlay because you’d still have to move everything, but it would be better.
As a short term measure , reorganising the room with eg book cases or boxes of bedding round the edges, or anything else that absorbs sound, would help.
I’d suggest biting the bullet, moving everything out and putting down a good thick carpet with underlay now, would save a lot of trouble.

You can get noise blocking carpet underlay. I've just put in down in bedroom and it worked.

Are you in an upper floor flat op? If so, downstairs can probably hear you too if your flooring doesn't consist of underlay and a fitted carpet.

You might want to consider really going for it and putting some insulation under your floor boards before getting a carpet fitted. Really good underlay will also help.

I agree this is the better option. Thanks

Oh excellent, I didn't know about that! Thank you.

Yes they must hear alot. Our living room is above one of their bedrooms.

Great idea. If money is an issue for you, you might ask the downstairs neighbour to contribute to the extra insulation. They must be bothered by your noise and insulating a ceiling is much more expensive and less efficient that a floor.
