Chandelier - to keep or to change?

I need advice! Should I keep this glass chandelier in the dining room? It was there when we bought the house. It needs to be repaired and is currently hanging too high above the table, so I’m wondering whether to bother with it, or whether I would be better off getting a different lamp. I quite like it, but I can’t decide if I prefer the current look with the chandelier in this period room, or if I’d like a more modern or simple lamp there. There’s only a table with chairs and a long mid century modern sideboard in the room.

I think I’d only keep it if I can repair myself (replace the broken tubes below the lightbulbs and add a longer chain.

I think these might look great with the furniture.

They are really beautiful, @TizerorFizz ,Tom Dixon's especially. I would need to save!

I am wondering about this type of designer lamps, because the receptions are quite busy, with plasterwork and coffer ceiling in the middle room (I won't have a pendnat lamp there). I looked at many great lamps already, and I am hesitating, because I am not yet sure if I want a statement, or an understated lamp, to pull it all together.

@PinkCamelias your house looks absolutely gorgeous (what I can see of it!)

We are also toleware fans, have a freestanding tall lamp with sort of “entwined, fanned out branches” also a couple of sconces that aren’t up yet.

Also have a Poulsen PH5 above our kitchen table, DH bought it before we met. I just looked at the website and they come in a myriad of colours now.

Anyway sorry, I digress. Your chandelier - keep! It’s beautiful.

PS love your sideboard too.

I'd keep it. I think it would look better without the chains of crystals, and if it were mine I'd paint the yellow centres of the flowers white.

Yes, are the crystals original? As I said we are fans of toleware but I don’t think I’ve seen ones with crystals. Not an expert though!

@PinkCamelias I know some lamps are very expensive but they are the WoW in the room if you keep plain walls and pared down furniture. I have an Arco arching over my long oak mid century dining table. We have Carl Hensen wishbone chairs and I think a fab light over the table makes the room. We don’t have high ceilings though. I wish I did! So the Arco was just right for the space.

I think they are; I can't see how they would be added later, also the glass looks the same as the rest of the lamp.

Isn't toleware metal only though?

I fully agree, and I am willing to save, once I choose! I envy you the Wishbone chairs, I love them.

Our walls are not plain, they are full of plasterwork (that I love) :)

Actually yes, I think (with my limited knowledge) that toleware is metal only.

Having said that, who cares, I still bloody love your chandelier :)

TizerorFizz · 17/01/2025 18:19

@PinkCamelias I meant a plain colour. They are a cool white so are a great backdrop for a statement pendant. I think a plain white one is a bit boring.

Hi @Snooks1971 thank you very much for the compliments! Nice to know that you also have a PH lamp. they are nice, aren't they? I bought mine on ebay from Denmark, they must have so many of them there :) And yes, the colurs now are amazing.

I would remove all the flowers and chains from the first piece and try adding anything wild you can think of- a long string of led tube lights wound around it? etc.
The second is terrific, but probably too small? It's much better to mix up modern and classic bits, keeps things from feeling stale.
At any rate do not make the mistake of hanging either too high ! HTH. Have fun. ;)

PinkCamelias · 17/01/2025 20:10

@Whataretalkingabout I can't remove the flowers, it's all one piece of glass!

Absolutely, whatever is there, I will make sure it's at the right height.

And thank you :)

Hi @PinkCamelias re the PH5: They are timeless it seems. They don’t seem to date.
IKEA did a great copy!

the proportions when you look at it sideways are just perfect

Snooks1971 · 17/01/2025 20:14

I mean the poulsen original x
