Any from Farnborough

Anyone from Farnborough? Apologies for the title typo… I’m looking at moving out of London to Farnborough - Rectory road (Farnborough Street) area, due to the good travel links back into london. I have two sons and a dog, youngest is 2 years old. Anyone from this area that can give me some insight… is it diverse, is it rough, high crime, any racism, schools, traffic? Thank you

There are other places with good travel links to London that are considerably more diverse, as you listed that first on your list I’m guessing it’s important to you, and I wouldn’t say Farnborough is the top spot for diversity.

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/01/2025 15:30

Farnborough is cheaper than other areas with good train links.

Thank you@BarneyRonson thank your feedback. Farnborough offers good value for money in terms of property.
I also have family living in surrounding areas.

Rectory Road is one of the better areas of Farnborough (not a high bar though). As for diversity, Farnborough is known to the locals as "Little Nepal" due to the large Gurkha population.

As for traffic, it can be a bit of a rat run with very heavy traffic during the rush our as it's the link from the Blackwater Valley Relief Road into town.

Where in London are you moving from? It might help to know what you are comparing it to.

Marz03 · 18/01/2025 16:41

@SoapySponge thank you that’s helpful to know.

@whatdoyouthink123456 to be honest I know no where out of london can compare to the diversity of London. Was really looking for a community based and family friendly area, not too rough. I have family I visit a lot in Woking, Addleston and Walton-on-Thames due to the community feel I never really notice the diversity or lack of.

There is a reason it's cheaper, because Farnborough isn't a very desirable. It's not super rough but it's not as nice as camberley etc. but Aldershot would be considered rougher than Farnborough so maybe you can gauge off that?

All areas have good and bad parts just research the area. As someone else said, it has diversity but it's know for its Nepalese community.

I grew up in camberley and moved further in to London, now living in Richmond. Obviously it's a very different way of life. Everything is further spread out in Surrey (need to drive everywhere) and worse public transport etc.

Going to be honest, we house sat for a relative in Farnborough. Although parts of the surrounding areas were lovely and obviously very desirable, the town itself wasn’t that much better than the town we live in in the NW. We were surprised at how deprived bits of it looked.

I have lived in Farnborough for over 50 years and love the place in fact I live in Rectory Road.. It has great train and bus services. There are both Private and the usual types of schools in the area. It is true there is a napal population but mainly away from Rectory Road. While there are not many social outlets like theatre, cinema etc there are plans for a swimming pool and there are these things in very nearby towns. plus lots of clubs to join. There are several nice parks and some shops in walking distance of Rectory Road which is a very pleasant area of the town. Yes traffic is busy on the main streets of the town at certain times of the day but that is true of most towns these days but there is the convenience of the motorway to london and airports and the Blacwater Valley Road to large local cities.I ackowledge that it is not an ideal town but nowadays few are but I find it has many attributes to make it a lovely town to live in.

No it’s not known as Little Nepal at all , maybe the odd person uses that ridiculous term but certainly not many!

Me neither. Work in this area and never, ever heard this! Aldershot is quite diverse and has a really good fruit and veg market once a week where you can get lots of very varied stuff, and there are lots of shops selling foodstuffs from all over the world. Lots of military families in the area from places like Ghana, Brunei, Fiji and yes, Nepal, as well as people who have come since Brexit from countries such as Zimbabwe and the Philippines for jobs in the NHS at the local hospital in Frimley.

Farnborough is not a bad place to live - it has one or two good schools, an excellent Sixth Form college and an excellent Technology college. Good transport links via the M3 and a mainline station which gets you to Waterloo in under an hour.

I was there from 1990 to 2013 and I heard the term numerous times.

Well to hear that, you must have been near people with a certain level of intelligence - low. Not to mention racist, as well as thick.

Very possibly. They were perfectly nice neighbours however.

We were near the Imperial Arms - now closed, I understand.
