To paint ceiling and walls the same colour?

We're about to have a new bathroom (distressed oak flooring and off white tiles with speaks of grey and beige covering a third of the room). We're putting Ivory on the walls. Rather than white (which is what we normally put on ceilings), DH has suggested we put the ivory on the ceilings as well. Quite a light bathroom, but about a third of the ceiling slopes.

Do you think ivory will look ok on ceiling as well?

To paint ceiling and walls the same colour?

I used to make the mistake of thinking that I had to paint once and once only, that paint was for life, not just for 'having a go'. Until I painted my living room (at great expense of time and effort) and then realised that I just didn't like it. So I had the sudden revelation that I could just change it, at any time. Honestly, I have no idea why I thought that I could only paint once! Now I change colours as often as suits me.

So why not give it a go! If you hate it or it doesn't work - you can paint over it!

Agree with the above. I recently went for a very bold colour in my bedroom, thinking it would be exciting. It has actually turned out to be awful so I'm swiftly painting over it. Even with a sample on the wall, it is hard to visualise what the whole room will look like.

Personally I don't like ceiling the same colour as the walls unless it's a very high ceiling-ed room. It can make the room feel like a goldfish bowl. But why not give it a try? Just paint over it if you don't like it.

I really hate painting ceilings- the worst DIY job- so although everyone's right that you can change it, you may as well at least aim for something you like first time. Having the same colour is quite fashionable at the moment (google colour drenching) but personally I prefer a white ceiling- I think it looks fresher and makes the room feel more spacious.

The problem is - when you like a colour when you first see it and when you paint the tester squares, but on subsequently putting it on all the walls you discover that it doesn't look as good as you imagined! (Me, painting my living room what I thought was 'pale, plaster pink' and turned out to look like the inside of a flamingo...)

I decided to paint DD's ceiling the same light grey as the walls simply to save time, and it looks great. I think you'll be fine, especially as ivory isn't that far off white anyway.

WithASpider · 15/01/2025 14:42

Our dining room has a pale pink ceiling to match the walls. It looks great and you can't really tell it's not white.

With Ivory I'd definitely go for it!

whynotnowdear · 15/01/2025 15:03

I'd go for it, especially with a pale colour like ivory.

Basically because it's so much easier to paint the ceiling the same as the walls as you don't have to worry about perfect cutting in or a wobbly line where the colour changes.
