How would you update this bathroom at low cost?

We've ordered a new corner bath as we need it for small children and we're thinking of painting the floor white. Not sure what to do with the walls.

I love subway tiles and hate these ones but we can't afford it (time and money!),

Would love some opinions!

I'd put down some lino (maybe pale blue and white chequered) and a new blind

@tangobravo You think Lino rather than painting the floor?

When I refreshed my main bathroom, I changed the flooring (to a pale lino) painted the walls dark blue (looks amazing), and changed the taps (to a classical shape from a bland modern shape) and got a new bath panel, and new blind. Really made a difference.

Oh definitely lino over painting the floor (personally!). It's softer underfoot, far easier to clean and won't scuff! But obviously it depends on what you mind/don't mind in terms of maintenance. I'm a low maintenance gal 😉 we put lino down in our bathroom for 2 years while we saved to do up the whole room and it lasted perfectly (and we fitted it ourselves so really cheap)

Ooooo thanks @Purplecatshopaholic . Do you think that would work with those tiles?

I think with small children splashing water everywhere, wooden floorboards are going to end up being a major pain. If you cover the floor with vinyl now, you can always remove and sand the floorboards down if you want to keep them bare or painted in future.

Bath panels are a lower cost alternative to wall tiles, and provided you’re reasonably handy, you can fit them yourself.

I like colour and bold prints so I'd do one wall in a bathroom suitable wallpaper and then use accessories to pick out a colour from the paper.

When we did our bathroom last year we used this paper on one wall then used a dark teal blue for towels and soap dish and such.

I wouldn’t paint the floor because once that gets wet or if there’s a leak it will bubble / peel and be an ongoing nightmare. Assume you don’t want to tile the floor but LVT can be quite nice? … I’ve had some samples that look like hardwood.

If you can’t afford to tile all of it I’d choose a statement tile for around the bath / one wall and then paint the rest neutral and have a plant somewhere.

Missionimprobable · 12/01/2025 19:26

I'd work around the tiles.
I wouldn't paint the floor, maybe sand, stain and varnish to make the floor waterproof.
Paint the walls either pale blue or pale green.
A nice patterned blind and some bath mats, a couple of pictures on the wall.
If you go for blue, I'd add some nautical themed accessories (sorry/not sorry, but I love nautical themed accessories) 😂😂

Absolutely! The paint will rapidly flake in a wet steamy bathroom, the floorboards will likely warp too. A nice tile effect flooring would be cosy underfoot too.
Something like this?

We've just spent nearly 3yrs renovating a derelict property and had to re do multiple bathrooms. I'm FAR from any expert though!
-With children, I would cover the flooring with lino! IF you have the money and time, you could sand the wood and re-varnish in a waterproof varnish, but I don't paint it!
-I don't understand the appeal of metro/subway tiles? They were on the way out when we started renovating 3yrs ago! More grout to clean and makes a room look smaller. Larger tiles = less grout cleaning and makes the room appear larger
-Around the bath, I'd have tiles, even if no where else.
