Flooring type and costs.

Can anyone help out a clueless first time buyer.
Moving to a small semi.
I want to replace the carpet in the bay fronted lounge and small downstairs hallway and upstairs small corridor with probably amtico/karndean or similar, unless it turns out to have lovely real wood under there, in which case sanded and stained etc. I also want to remove stair carpet and replace with a stair runner.
I have no diy skills at all and not a lot of money.
Could anyone help me out with a rough guesstimate of costs and what kind of flooring they'd recommend, wanting something as close to natural wood I guess to help me figure out if this is something I could potentially do before I move in.
Thanks!

Get engineered wood for about GBP 30 per square metter plus around the same price to get it fitted (London). Buy runner online for GBP 100 and stapple it yourself, fairly easy if stairs are straight. Make sure to paint/sand the staircase before.

Ok that sounds cheaper than i was thinking. I guess I need to pull up some carpet to see what's under there first and then decide? But maybe not possible to get it fitted before I move in if there's only a couple of weeks crossover.

Amtico/kardean usually £75-£95 per sqm
cheaper lvt around £60-£75 sqm
carpets anything from £20sqm to £100sqm depending on type and underlay

i will say we have just moved into a pre way house with bare floorboards that have been sanded and finished- its incredibly cold. On windy days you can feel the cool literally coming through so switching to lvt as soon as possible.

That's helpful. The rental I've been in for last 10 years has wooden floors in most rooms and so I'm probably just used to the cold under feet! but anything that helps with heating costs is definitely worth considering. Just desperate to get the carpet up asap if I can afford it because there's carpet in the hallway and my dog constantly has very muddy and wet paws!

You can get Carpet as cheap as £3.50, Underlay from £3, Vinyl from £7 & Laminate from £8 per sqm... thats for the most basic without fitting.

Prices go up from there and could be endless depending on quality and what you want and if you have it fitted etc...

You may be able to get flooring second hand (reclaimed wood), or from someone who overbought for their project. I did the latter and got enough for my whole room for 1/3 the price! I wanted herringbone, which cost 50 psqm to lay, so saving on the flooring covered the extra installation costs. (SE London)
