Hello- looking for ideas on how to approve this layout if possible..

the kitchen seems quite restrictive in that there’s a storage cupboard in the bottom right hand side of it.

I’m not sure how to work it as a kitchen diner , there’s not a lot of units in there as it is ..

do you think knocking down the wall between lounge and kitchen would help or perhaps putting double doors in (however this
option would not make the lounge any more bigger)

unable to extend at side so not sure if lounge being made bigger would even be possible.

any ideas welcome 🤗

It could be difficult and would involve moving drainage, water and possibly gas, but what about shifting the kitchen element over to the left hand side and then having the right hand side as the diner?

Is it possible to change the cupboard to be accessed from the lounge? Though need to think through where lounge furniture goes.

My old house was a similar layout so know the struggles! I think the prior owner had moved the door to create more continuous wall space?

In your case could you move the door so it is next to the cupboard? That gives you a longer wall to play with both in the lounge and kitchen. I agree with PP who said to consider dining area on the right and move kitchen to left. Moving the door would assist with creating a bigger space for units. If you didn't want to have a door you could consider having it as an opening instead.

I also removed the fire from my lounge.

Change the door into the under stairs cupboard into the sitting room, then have the longest U shaped run of units you can fit at that end. Dining table at the other end. We had a kitchen 10' x15' arranged like that for 20 years, and it worked well (2 children)

Move the entry into the lounge as far right as possible, then use left hand side of the existing kitchen/diner to include a U-shaped kitchen with a peninsular. Then dining area to the right.

I would move the door to the cupboard onto the lounge or move the kitchen to the other end of the room. The door between the kitchen and lounge could also be moved relatively easily if it helps. Making it all open plan will just give you less wall space and make it harder to fit kitchen cupboards in.

@TeeBee @minipie something like this ?

No, the other way around so you don't lose your cupboard. Effectively, you switch your kitchen area to the other side of the room.

I would make the cupboard into a pantry for all your food storage then this doesnt need to be provided in kitchen units. Or as others have said access it from the lounge.

Then I would move the door to the lounge to the far left so you can have a much longer run of kitchen. You could also consider moving the external double doors and window to the far left also to give more room for kitchen on this wall, it depends on how much storage/appliances/work surface you need? You can keep dining on the left and not have to move pipes and drainage.

The patio doors take up a lot of wall space too - are they necessary in such a small room? I'd replace with a single fully glass back door, to utilise the extra spot for fridge freezer etc.

FunPinkSwan · 07/01/2025 11:51

@TeeBee oh I see ….yes that works well . Thank you !!!

@JimHalpertsWife I thought the same .

@Sanch1 good idea about the pantry too ! Would prefer not to move piping etc if possible as believe it would be easier but might have to play around

thanks all- lots of ideas to play with here :)
