Colour scheme ideas please for darkish rooms

We just moved house and while I love it it seems quite dark. We need to redecorate everywhere anyway so I'm looking for some ideas on how to brighten it all up. At the moment all the walls are a sort of magnolia with very dark wood (teak maybe? Or mahogany?) woodwork everywhere.
We have a north west facing kitchen diner and a south east facing lounge.
Looking for ideas / inspo please. Obviously planning to paint all woodwork white gloss so really looking for wall colour and kitchen unit ideas.
In the last place we lived we had double facing rooms everywhere so everything was super light and bright. We've gone from a shallow wide house to a more narrow deep one!

I’d have a look for what whites are best for the way each room faces. I know for north facing you generally want something with a warmer undertone and you’d probably want to apply the same to kitchen units etc. White gloss is not your only option for woodwork (in fact I’d never go gloss, eggshell is more contemporary), and if you were going white/off white on walls your woodwork can provide a bit of a contrast.

I’m a big fan of yellow at the moment, and depending on style of house this would look fab as a kitchen in a north facing room (see pics)

If I were to redo mine I’d probably go for wood units (mixed with white) as they can really warm up the space with brass hardware. I just searched contemporary wood kitchens on Pinterest and lots of ideas.

What style of house is it?

Have a look at joining the Farrow & Ball Lovers FB group. Even if you have no intention of using F&B paint, this question is asked a lot there. There's often an assumption that you need to go light in north-facing rooms but it's not always the case. I found the F&B group good for challenging assumptions and embracing a more modern approach (e.g. ditching the gloss woodwork, leaning into small / large or dark / light places instead of trying to neutralise / combat them).

You might want to consider darker warm colours. Most whites, even those with a warm undertone, can look a bit cold and stark in a North facing room.

Painting North facing rooms darker colours can make them feel very cozy.

I'd very much avoid white gloss. It won't do what you think it will!

If you don't want to go this way, you need a pink or yellow. Nothing with any hint of blue, green or pure white.

Thanks everyone..it's a 1930s house. It's got big windows so shouldnt be dark really. I think maybe I was spoilt in the last place so it seems even darker to me. I actually did consider using the dark as almost a feature with dark walls etc but I'm not sure that would work for a kitchen (which is the north facing room)
