Help! What's the likelihood of admiral extending buildings insurance cover?

Hi everyone!

I appreciate you can't give me a firm answer but I was just wondering if anyone's faced the same predicament and if so, what did you do?

I bought my first house nearly 2 months ago and planned to move in just before Christmas. Unfortunately, this was delayed due to some works not being finished on time. However (luckily) my buildings insurance covered me for 60 days if the house was unoccupied. This runs out tomorrow night and I'm not moving in until the following weekend (10th Jan). I'll definitely be moved in by then.

What's the likelihood of admiral extending cover just for 1 week? I want to make sure the house is properly insured obviously but it seems like a massive hassle to amend the policy/pay extra just to change it back a week later, right?

There won't be any furniture there so I can't pretend that I've moved in (if the worse happened and I had to claim, for example). I will of course ring them tomorrow, but just wondered if anyone's gone through the same thing.

Shameful bump

Everything is possible, for a price.

I think you need to ask them, not us.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 03/01/2025 18:55

Just ring them. They will likely charge a small fee.

moneymaker25 · 03/01/2025 18:55

@Snowmanscarf I did say I would ask them...

Just Google empty property cover, it's more expensive but you can get short term cover, not sure how short term but I've had it for a month in the past. Whatever you do, make sure you get it covered, it's not worth the risk

moneymaker25 · 03/01/2025 19:01

@wakeboarder so I'd have to cancel the cover with admiral and get cover somewhere else? Definitely don't want to take the risk but it seems crazy just for 1 week. I've had a look on admirals website and unfortunately they won't extend it after 60 days. Argh

Sorry don't know exactly what you'd need to do in your particular circumstances. I'd speak to Admiral and ask. I was just pointing out empty property cover exists but is more expensive. Just don't leave it uncovered even if it means changing for a short time and then reinsuring when you are in the property.

Something else to consider - you can't take any holidays/nights away if you've already used up your 60 days - I believe it resets annually. The 60 days is to cover usual holidays and stuff. I think you needed a different type of insurance if it was sitting empty!

Basically phone them up to explain everything and let them answer you.

@Tillow4ever I'm wondering this now too, but when I spoke to the agent at admiral 3 weeks ago I said I hadn't moved in yet and she said it was fine as I had 60 days... it's really confusing. I'll phone them in the morning.

Definitely worth a conversation! I might be wrong and they might have tailored the policy for your needs.. or someone at their end might have not thought about that part! Unless it just states not more than 60 days at a time?

Hope you get sorted and good luck in your new home!
