hello we are currently renting & probably not buying for at least a year. The main room downstaires is a lounge/dinner with pale yellow walls and a rose (dark pink) carpet with horrid yellow curtains. I have put up with it as long as possible but can't take it anymore!! DH is reluctant to paint the room, and we are stuck with the carpet. To add to all this I am incompletent at interior design and would love some suggestions for colour change of curtains,or any good ideas for colour schemes for repainting (DH can be swayed!) Sorry for long post.

Just go with neutral colours. You cant go wrong, then that way you can choose whatever curtains you want.

it's greyish/blue..the other issue is that the room is quite large and we haven't really brought any new furniture as don't want to lose it if new house has smaller rooms (does that make sense?)

ie everything is against the walls and the dcs toys dominate. Upstaires is fine...feels like home, but the main living space is just horrid.

I've fallen completely out of love with yellow and completely in love with pale greens and sand colours. like this Green Ground and this Cooking Apple Green
Wood and creams go very well with these colours. It may not be great with the carpet but I would suggest getting a cream carpet remnant and getting it edged. It's not too expensive.

Dulux I think sorry

PeaGreene · 02/05/2008 21:49

You could do the dark pink with greys / neutrals. You could add lots of different pinks / reds through to deep wine type colours.

Or throw in a bit of green with pale pinks for a chintzy country look?

Definitely ditch yellow with pink.

plus3 · 02/05/2008 21:58

now I really like pale greens, so could I go for some sort of white but not quite green on the walls then what for the curtains? Sorry but am really very crap with this sort of thing

katymac sorry wasn't being rude about which paints just couldn't think how to spell dulux

Course you can. Stick with something neutral on the walls then you can just pick out colours with the curtains.

TBH though, I'd start by buying curtains you like THEN choose a paint. Easier to find a paint colour to match your new curtains than the other way round.

KatyMac · 02/05/2008 22:11

Don't worry I feel daft for not saying

I agree pick the curtains first put them on the sofa flowing on to the floor to check they work

If you aren't fussy - sheets make good curtains for the short term - also if you need to you can use the existing curtains as lining

plus3 · 02/05/2008 22:21

very much like the cooking apple green - would cream (ish) curtains pull that all together?

OP posts:
PeaGreene · 02/05/2008 22:46

sounds fine to me.

Get the curtains, then if you're really wary, try a couple of match pots before painting the whole walls. Nothing wrong with both cream curtains and walls, if it all seems a bit much.

plus3 · 02/05/2008 22:55

thanks everyone am off to convince DH that painting is FUN!!!

I have the dulux easycare Cannes on the walls of the sitting room and we have really cheap cream curtains. I think it works pretty well. We also have dark red sofas which I wouldn't have thought would go that well with the green but it does. I've added a couple of pictures to my profile (for a couple of days) so you can see how this particular paint looks.
As you can see it really changes colour depending on how much light it's getting.
