Garden office

Anyone have any recommendations for decent garden offices that don’t cost the earth?

Dh works from home and current office is in the box bedroom, but we would like that room back.

I don’t know where to start really, just thought I’d try and get some ideas from people who alreasy have one!

we have the room, currently have an 8x10 dilapidated shed in the garden that we are getting rid of when the weather is less grotty.

Having some building work done on the house in the summer so would be a great time to do it all together.

I’m amazed it’s so warm!

I work in it all year round. Don’t get me wrong I need the radiator on in the winter but it’s not on all day, it’s on a thermostat and clicks on and off.

The floor gets cold in the winter so I bought myself some Rab insulated slippers, like puffer jacket material. I put lino flooring down as well.

Would a Hully Pod work? https://hullypods.com/

Ooh they look like something from the Night Garden!

@mumto3boysHE what's the name of the company?

I honestly think Dh has his head in the clouds about one. I’d rather he fucked off to the office everyday. Anything decent is going to cost the earth.

Off topic , but I love the way you write!! You sound a right hoot!

Ah thank you! My lack of actual friends betrays that 😆

My poor husband is like a crestfallen toddler at the moment. He had his heart set on a little office down the end of the garden for him and the dog to hide in all day, but I think it will be too much with the other work we want to do to the house.

One of those Hully pods would be excellent, but short of launching it over the house with a giant catapult, I don’t know how we’d get it in place.

It says their delivery service includes a crane.

There’s a photo of one being craned over a house roof.

We have a garden building from Okopod - it doesn't need a concrete base as it is built on a metal base. Just needed a hole to drop it into. It was craned in. A classic might be just in budget here. It's really cosy - insulated with sheep wool and I just have a small wall hung heater.

We will definitely look into it when we’ve got all the quotes in for the inside work. But our house is so awkward. It’s not just getting it over the house it’s extended quite far at the back too and then the garden is a huge drop down. It would have to be some crane.

A side view of my house and garden. We are on a hill. The single story extention is 12 feet long, then a Steep drop off from house and a few narrow terraces with lots of steps connecting until you get to the flat ground. No other way in, it’s other peoples gardens at the back and sides. It sounds like a fucking nightmare, but it’s actually quite pretty.

You know in Sean of the Dead when they have to jump over all the garden fences? It’s like that.

I’m really not sure how you’d go about craning something over all that to get to the bit large enough and flat enough ti set the pod down.

The one I rent is built in situ and can be fitted into the smallest of spaces with it carried through the house if necessary. It doesn't need a concrete base. It's insulated, in fact ours is south facing and is too warm if the sun is out, I've had the door open today. Air con is fitted as well. Mine is 16 x 8, but they do 8 x 8, 12 x 8 and 20 x 8.

It's 25 year guarantee no maintenance as well. I'll post a link for the company when I can remember their name! 😁

This is the company. They fit them into the smallest of spaces. Most of their builds are sales and they tailor to fit what you need/want but they also rent 4 different length offices. Best thing I ever did for our business.

I think anything would have to be flat pack. And obviously done before we spend £££ doing new floors in the house.

Yours is pretty much like my house. No side access and a big drop down. It's an utter waste of space

This looks so good. But how long do you have to rent it for if you don’t mind me asking. I couldn’t easily find the t and c on the website . I’m just wondering if you only needed it for a few years

The previous owners did the best they could with the landscaping but yes, I long to fling open the French windows and step out onto a flat garden, rather than look down into all those steps.

We stayed in a holiday cottage for a a few weeks in the summer with a lovely, flat garden and it was fantastic.

It's a minimum of 18 months if I remember correctly. I've had mine 4 years now.

Oh that’s brilliant and thanks for answering all these queries. Very kind

Carlfredrickson · 26/03/2025 22:17

I just wanted to report back as our Hully has been delivered. They put it on a small lorry with a crane. The driver then lifted it over our fence. We put it on some wheels and then pushed it to the location in the garden. The driver was brilliant and did most of the work. I think it would be tricky without any access to your garden, but if you can get it into roughly the right area, then they can be pushed into place. We're really pleased with it so far.

This is it being lifted over the fence. Our garden is a total tip at the moment so I haven't got a good one of it in place yet.

Mydogisamassivetwat · 27/03/2025 12:05

Oh that’s amazing!

We did actually contact the company. There’s no way they could get it over my house and down all the levels of the garden.

So, we have scrapped that idea now.

When we get the sitting room closed off and the rest of the back of the house opened up (the kitchen, dining room and playroom all in one), dh is going to build (well, get built by someone who knows what they are doing), an office cupboard in one of the alcoves beside the chimney breast. We will have the room for it to come out slightly and he’s found some sort of super duper office chair that is actually foldable too which will fit under the desk while it’s not in use.

hes also got around the 3 screen issue by getting a 43” Monitor where he can split the screen. He got the biggest that would fit on the wall in the alcove. Hes been using it for a few weeks in his existing office and it’s going well.

The opened up area will have the kitchen, the dining area and the playroom that is also being incorporated is big enough a proper sofa, and opens directly to the garden, so when we are all in the house and dh is working, we will still all have enough room without having to use the sitting room when he’s in there working.

Then 4 year old dd can have the box room office as her own little bedroom.

Just getting all the steels etc measured now so hopefully we’ll be underway in the summer.

@Carlfredricksonnow you’ve had it for a few months how are you getting on with it, how was it in the cool weather and then the hot summer? Thinking about getting their smallest office pod.
