Outdoor Lights

Hi,

My friend told me to make sure to get IP65 or above for outside wall lights and I've just been shopping where the majority are IP54, the woman there looked at me like I had two heads when I asked and she said that if they are marked as for outdoors then they are made to withstand what we get from Mother Nature.

How much is it something to worry about? The majority I've found I like online are 54, as well.

Thanks!

Anything above IP44 is OK for outside. IP65 is fully waterproof bathroom rated. If they are going in a sheltered position outside IP44 is fine.

As the above mentioned - I'd recommend going to Screwfix or B&Q of the like. They stock them there.

Rule of thumb, use the 2nd number in the IP rating for outdoor suitability.
IPx3 suitable for out door use under cover, e.g. a covered porch
IPx4 splashproof, will allow a little water ingress which will drain
IPx5 jet proof, will withstand being hosed down for example.
IPx6 Watertight for the most demanding wet installations
IPx7 and IPx8 immersible and submersible
