Strange smell... no idea what to do

In the living room. Smells of damp/general mustyness.

It comes intermittently and is quite strong. I've checked everywhere no signs of damp at all. Air fresher lasts about 10 mins before it's back. It comes in a big waft then goes then comes back?!

I've no idea what it could be... going to wash carpets tomorrow and see of that helps but any ideas?! It's driving me mad...

My DS had a horrid smell in his (large) porch for months. He cleaned it out several times. He checked all the coats to see if any need washing, checked soles of shoes for dog poo. Finally in the toe of a seldom worn pair of trainers he found a dead mouse😳. Presumably it hid in there and died; having been brought in by one of his Dcats.

We heard it and the tiles were soaking. Nothing was moldy though that time or this smell. It was cleared professionally and been fine since.

Tomorrow is a clear the living room, wash, check toybox declutter... try and isolate. If not guess I'm calling... someone...

In all seriousness, my vote is on something in the toy box!

I think it's a very valid shout... I'll check it later/tomorrow and update...

We had same problem - after 2 years we finally traced it to a small section of false ceiling above the stairwell; it was made of hardboard and papered over. This false ceiling was trapping cold air, creating a cold spot for condensation to form, hence the musty smell.

A house I rented developed a musty smell. Ended up that the lead pipe main water feed to the back kitchen ran under the house and had a leak. Was like a swimming pool under the wooden floor. Landlord copped for the £700 water bill.

Well I'm at a loss.

I've been round this whole room. Top to bottom. Can't find anything! Neighbour came in with some contraption that detected damp - didn't go off at all. It did in an upstairs bedroom slightly but nowhere else.

Carpet seems dry. We had a leak before in the kitchen and it was soaking.

This is going to drive me mad forever. Going to wash the sofa cushions tomorrow.

DP says he can't smell it anymore but I definitely can!

Dehumidifier might help. Meaco are great.

Ok there may be an update...

While I was out shopping for Sprouts Christmas eve DH has just told me DS was a bit sick on the floor.

He said he cleaned it but totally forgot to mention it to me...

Could this be it...? It doesn't smell of sick it smells musty though...

Im going to bi carb the area it apparently happend later as DH would have definitely just rub it in badly...

Update...

A night of scrubbing the area of supposed throw up and bi carb soda and the smell is SLOWLY getting lighter.

Another layer of bi carb tonight over night.

It still smells absolutely terrible but I think it's getting better. Either that or my nostrils have burnt off...

Would there have been any milk in the sick? 🤢

Not milk but probably ice cream - DS loves it and DH will have let him eat and eat it.... so could explain it!

I'm hoping so anyway.

One good that's come out of this is I've basically done a spring clean on the living room haha
