Removal packers

We're moving house on 3rd Jan, Packers coming 2nd Jan but they're closed until that day for Christmas break so I can't contact them to ask questions!
When they did the quote they told me they would do everything (including dismantling furniture, un-plumbing washing machines etc) but I wanted to ask someone who's had packers before - is it really EVERYTHING? Feels so weird to not be packing stuff up right now and I'm paranoid that they'll get here on the 2nd and think I'm nuts for not having done stuff (other than clearing out crap) and it will be an absolute mad panic to get everything done. Help!

Yes,
Let them pack and take the stress away. It is true!

ILoveAnnaQuay · 29/12/2024 14:20

Worth every penny and yes, they do pack everything. When we were unpacking after our latest move we found things like random pen lids wrapped up. They don't try and make decision or cone and bother you about what to pack, they just do it all.

Janek · 29/12/2024 14:23

We moved in 2019 and I've literally just realised that the packers must have unplumbed and replumbed the washing machine and dishwasher. They are blimmin amazing and as pp said, worth every penny. Keep aside anything you don't want them to pack (kettle, tea, loo roll?) because they pack everything.

JoyousPinkPeer · 29/12/2024 14:27

We went on holiday and left ours to pack up and move us. They know what they are doing.

muddyford · 29/12/2024 14:30

Yes, they pack everything. Put stuff you need to be left out till moving day away from them and label clearly that they aren't to be packed.

Isthisreasonable · 29/12/2024 14:32

Yes everything. Get anything that needs washing up done before they arrive or it will get wrapped as is.

If there is anything particularly precious or that you wouldn't want them to see, wrap it yourself and put it in the car ahead of them arriving.

Don't think you are being helpful making a start on packing. They need to have packed items themselves for it to be covered on their insurance

helpfulperson · 29/12/2024 14:33

They will pack and move everything. Anything that you don't want packed, or want accessible quickly at the other end like tea and coffee supplies needs to go into the car or someone else's house. Also handbags, glasses etc The speed they move at is amazing but as PP said they don't make decisions and anything in the house will be packed. Rubbish will remain in bins, half used packets of food will be packed, Anything put down on a table will also be packed so keep a firm hold of keys etc.

Isthisreasonable · 29/12/2024 14:35

They pack at the speed of light so don't stop to query anything, which is why the tips above are so important

TickingAlongNicely · 29/12/2024 14:38

I preferred to pack some stuff myself (like clothing) but they did pack everything they could get their hands on. A friend had a full nappy bin packed for an international move....

stripeystripedstripes · 29/12/2024 16:33

Make sure things are in the right rooms. If you’ve left something important somewhere random, it’s getting packed with stuff from the random place!

Shwish · 29/12/2024 17:24

Thanks everyone this is VERY helpful

Everything everything! Empty your bins before they come if you don't want rubbish coming with you because they will pack it.

Doggymummar · 29/12/2024 21:34

Yes, and you can pay for unpacking too, which is even better.

Bluevelvetsofa · 29/12/2024 22:42

Don’t leave anything out that you may need. It’ll get packed. A friend put out a clean nappy and it disappeared into the removal van. We’ve discovered things in our recent move, that we’d forgotten about and we thought we’d decluttered and then decluttered again.

Make sure there’s plenty of tea, biscuits, or other drinks at both ends.

Remember, anything they pack, they’re insured for. Anything you pack, you’re not, unless you take out your own insurance. Having said that, we filled the car with suitcases, iPads, Kindles etc.

Timeforabiscuit · 29/12/2024 22:45

They are magical elves, there really is no other explanation for what they do.

Seriously spend as much time decluttering as humanly possible.

mummymummymummummum · 30/12/2024 11:18

Yes, everything! I had to return the hardware for the Virgin Media connection because it was all unscrewed and packed! Fortunately I discovered it pretty quickly (and we’d not moved far), so I popped it back round the next day 🫢

Oh, and my eldest’s school uniform got packed - she had to rewear her pe kit 😬 They packed more than planned the day before move date!

bloodredfeaturewall · 30/12/2024 11:21

yes, everything.
including dirty dishes and the garage remote.
the only thing they asked us to do is to run an empty spin cycle on the washer and to put in the transport bolts if you have them.

Arlanymor · 30/12/2024 11:28

Fill the car with the stuff you don’t want packed - with the exception of tea, coffee, milk, biscuits that you can put on a tray with a note asking them not to pack it and then chuck it in a box and put in the car the morning you leave. Make sure you get a takeaway/go out for dinner on the evening of the 2nd.

We are moving on the 10th of January and have done the same, OP. Apart from going through and doing the 'pre-move cull' of shit we don't need, we also haven't done anything else and it is really bizarre! But, yes, they really do come and do absolutely everything. We've got this over 2 days (big house, lots of stuff as currently contains my mother's worldy belongings and furniture too) so they're packign one day and we're moving the next.

We shall pack a suitcase of essentials and that's it. Worth every penny tbh!

MonopolyQueen · 30/12/2024 11:48

Yes everything. It’s magical. You will need to be in six places at once initially directing how you want boxes labelled , and making endless cups of strong very sweet tea and coffee. I bought some full sugar Coca Cola and Mars Bars etc - that was very popular. It’s hot, physical work and they work incredibly long hours ImE.

user1471538283 · 31/12/2024 10:33

Yes they will pack everything! So if there is anything really important you pack it and put it in the car.

I've always packed an essentials box and a suitcase in the car so you've got stuff for your first night or couple of nights.

CherryBlossom321 · 31/12/2024 10:54

We recently got a quote, and the only thing they asked us to do was to bring things down from the loft beforehand. I’m guessing it will vary from one company to another though.

Frumpylab · 31/12/2024 14:32

Yes they pack everything! I asked similar on here a few weeks back before we moved! My tips having recently done it - they did our outside stuff and washing machine last, just before we were due out to hand over keys .. there were issues unplumbing the washer (apparently very common and can confirm, very stressful), and after emptying shed, there was a massive muddy mess to clear up, right at the last minute. So if I did it again I would ask them them to do these potentially messy jobs early on (and not pack all the brushes and buckets before they had completed these jobs!). Good luck

Yes, this is one of the things I'm worried about when we do our move. I'm sure that once they start loading our stuff, we'll see how much needs cleaning and then it'll be panic stations trying to get it done before handing over the keys. The logistics of the move are now starting to freak me out, especially as we are moving several hours away so will have a long drive to factor in too.
