Moving from South to North - Advice please!

Hi All!

I'm planning to move from London and have been considering moving up North. After a decade in London, I feel like I need a change. More of a work-life balance and being able to afford a property are strong reasons for the move.

I have been looking at areas and North Yorkshire looks like a strong option. I would need to work so not sure how commutable that would be to a city like Leeds?

Any suggestions of areas to consider or advice would be much appreciated from a clueless Londoner.

Thanks!

LOL, treated myself to a city break in Glasgow for my 40th. Picked the wrong weekend as Celtic were at home and so half the city felt like a war zone with throngs of people best steered clear of.

reassuring to know some 20 years later nothing has changed

Gravy on chips? Nay that's from t'wrong side of the Pennines.

I was brought up by a Lancastrian in the south, now live in Yorkshire. Thankfully gravy is readily available and I’m bringing my kids up right but it’s a mixed marriage and I sometimes worry the north east curry sauce faction will out. So far I’ve kept that to McNuggets though.

This is the sort of thing you’ll need to prepare for in the giant cultural shift up north.

OP what is your budget? York was recently listed as the most unaffordable place to buy, and is mainly health, tourism or the uni for jobs Leeds is cheaper and has more jobs

North Yorkshire is bloody awful. Tedious backwatery places and everyone with a slow half arsed accent. Havent you considered a bit further North where people are less yokel?

Wow, a bit snobby! The accent is very nice actually. It has the blend of the Yorkshire friendliness and comfort with something that resembles the sing-song north-east accent.

That is so rude and ill-informed. I suppose it's intended as a joke, but how would you like your home to be described like that?

I know this is a bit of a zombie.

I know all about mixed marriages, my brother lives in Cornwall, his wife is from Devon. The cream and jam on scones and the crimp on a pasty are so important.

Whilst I much prefer Sheffield to Leeds, I'll defend Leeds' accessibility. 2hrs 15 from London by train, and about an hour from Manchester, and on the M1. It's hardly difficult to get to.

The train from Sheffield to London only takes two hours I get it regularly and the timetables really good.

Pretty much all of England, Wales and NI are in the south of the UK. Annoy those "northerners" with facts!

DD (Yorkshire) is at Uni in The Midlands and its crazy to her when people talk about travelling North to go to Uni, or even going North to get to London

I'm a soft Southern pansy, and I'd like to apologise for my neighbours invading the Great County of Yorkshire with their notions of good schools, arts scenes, coffee shops and house prices. Shouldn't be allowed.

Obviously. Most people mean north of England when they say 'the north'. There are historical and linguistic differences that define the north and south. I'm from North Yorkshire and I know I would be classed as a southerner to a Scottish person.

If you are commuting back down to London, plus want a bit of city life but with countryside nearby then I would definitely look at the golden triangle of Manchester with Aldgate, Wilmslow and Prestbury - really nice houses, some countryside and can get into Manchester quickly too.

Prices are quite high but I think you can find some good bargains, as this area is getting more and more popular. There are lots of tools to help you find them and also can just use basic things like rightmove alerts for example to help.
