Karndean, yes or no.

Just undertaking a complete house renovation. Last house we used tiles, in hallway, kitchen and bathroom, but no matter what we used to clean them they never looked pristine. So thinking of using Karndean in the same rooms this time, but also wondering if it would work in reception rooms & bedrooms.

Love mine all downstairs done in it.

HeddaGarbled · 27/12/2024 19:48

Karndean is excellent and perfect for kitchens and bathrooms. But it’s really just posh lino and I wouldn’t want it in by bedroom or living room.

I agree it’s great. I wish I’d put something on my kitchen bench tbh, because that has scratched it a bit, but it’s not obvious unless you’re looking closely- and it is otherwise very hardwearing.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 27/12/2024 19:57

Which range of Karndean? Some are far more bombproof than others and last years, the basic range, i think it is called knight tile, I wouldn’t recommend if you are looking for durability. Always had Da Vinci range fitted and it has been brilliant.

MyNewLife2025 · 27/12/2024 20:14

It’s excellent.
Weve had ours in the living room for about 10 years now and it’s like brand new.

Absolutely no regret there.

Justhere65 · 27/12/2024 20:19

I love it. We have it downstairs and it always cleans well … so easy. We have a dark wood colour and get lots of compliments. It feels warm underfoot too.

Luddite26 · 27/12/2024 20:22

Great if it's the good range and fitted well.
I have known things mark it in kitchens like stainless steel stools leaving strange stains on it and it can get scratched. Fantastic if you look after it.

Theoscargoesto · 27/12/2024 20:25

I was disappointed in it in my kitchen, scratched easily and obviously. Tiles wear better in my view (but are colder-underfloor heating needed).

Gatehouse77 · 27/12/2024 20:27

We’ve had ours with underfloor heating across the whole of downstairs for 7.5 years and are very pleased with it.

We also have it in 1 bedroom as DD was a dancer and has a barre in her room too.
As and when she moves out it will either become a study (easy for chairs and castors) or a gym.

LoveSandbanks · 27/12/2024 20:29

We have Amtico all downstairs. Personally I love it, it's practically bullet proof.Sure I'd like a softer look in the living room but we have dogs and a carpet isn't practical. In fact they ruined the carpet and we replaced it with Amtico as it was in the rest of downstairs.

CMOTDibbler · 27/12/2024 20:30

We have it all through downstairs, and the current one replaced 15 year old Karndean (we had an extension built so a lot had to come up and we like the match) which had resisted dogs, small children, muddy boots and a general neglect on our part (never using the proper products or resealing).

No, absolutely not!!! Our Karndean floor which is a dark wood scratches so easily. It's been a complete disaster, you have to use special cleaning fluid and a specific hoover head to stop it scratching! Don't do it!!!!!

Whammyammy · 27/12/2024 21:14

Isn't it just a more expensive lino

I have the dark wood colour and don’t use any special cleaner (just a squirt of Method) and don’t have a specific hover head? Still looks perfect after 3 years.

We have it in the hall (12 years or more) and dining room. The dining room is herringbone and a thing of beauty and like new. The hall is more worn, but a lighter oak plank look and when I give it a good clean and refinish it, it looks great. The reality is, I don't do it very often, but it's hard wearing and forgiving.

I have Polyflor in the kitchen which is cheaper and very serviceable and looks good.

What range have you got, my experience couldnt be more different, no scratches, no special Hoovers or cleaning products

I discussed with a couple of friends who had it in their kitchens before deciding to buy and they said exactly same, they both couldn't recommend it highly enough

Ours is nothing like this.
No special hoover, no special cleaning liquid.
And it looks perfect 10 years on.

One of the reasons why chose Kardean is because it’s often used in rentals because it’s so hard wearing.

Found absolutely no difference between the mid and top Karndean ranges and Amtico. Have had plenty of both over the last 25 yrs. karndean takes no more maintenance than Amtico.

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/12/2024 15:10

I think all floors like Karndean and Amtico need a lot of maintenance. Our Amtico was ten years old and showing its age in the kitchen. Less so in the hall.

CrazyHorse · 28/12/2024 16:14

I'm marking my place, as considering it for all of downstairs - my DM and MIL both have it in their kitchens, and both have lasted really well for a long time, with no special treatment. I'd be interested to hear of anything that might be better for the whole of the downstairs.

Its very different.
Lino (short for lineoleum) is a completely different product to Vinyl, which is what Karndean is. Different manufacturing process and made from different things
I have wood effect vinyl planks in my entire house other than on the stairs and am considering getting rid of that too.

TheOneWithUnagi · 28/12/2024 20:03

I've been very unimpressed with the Karndean we put down about 9 months ago, it's really scratched up and when I dropped a bowl and it broke it left a deep scratch where the bowl cut into it.
We had quickstep laminate in our previous house and it looked great years later.
So disappointing given the cost and I absolutely would not recommend!
I wish we had used tiles now, especially as the cost would have been similar!
