Using command strips on plastic

I've bought some command strips but I've never used them before. Strangely enough, it doesn't matter if they leave a residue on the painted wall but the thing I'm hanging is plastic - will it leave a residue or damage that? Thanks.

Does it matter? Won't the residue be on the back bit where you won't see it? I think once it is stuck you will have a job getting any of it off let alone the reside but there is probably something which will dissolve the glue like acetone?

Yes, it matters because the plastic thing is valuable and could be resold on eBay when I've finished with it so it's far better for it to not be damaged in any way.

I thought the point of command strips was that they can be removed cleanly, though?

If the item can be cleaned with mild chemicals then yes it's fine to use them. Be mindful that command strips do fail and they do tear paint off walls (I've experienced both and had expensive pictures fall off the wall)

I've just removed a load of command strips (leaving a rented property) and none of them left residue or damaged the paint.
In my experience, the issue arrises if the tab you have to pull snaps, or you don't pull completely vertically.
On occasions I've pulled at an angle and that has caused damage.
