A real doer upper (for half the price of the one in Kew)

There was a recent thread here about a £7.5 million house in Kew (this is not a thread about a thread, I'm just explaining why I posted this)

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/property/5234446-ps75m-dream-house-in-kew

To me, I thought that home needed quite a bit of TLC to get it sorted out. It also reminded me of the ridiculous cost of property in London.
.

In comparison, while I was searching for something on Rightmove I came across this nice little property, for less than half the price of the house in Kew, but it equally needs some work doing on it.

It's in the Gloucestershire village of Apperley about six miles outside of Cheltenham.

It's Grade II listed, the main house is 2,000 sq metres (21,600 sq ft), various outbuildings and 20 acres of land.

Apparently, this is the first time the house has been up for sale since 1815.

I have absolutely no idea who would buy this type of house today, unless maybe they were going to turn it into a hotel or something.

Check out this 28 bedroom detached house for sale on Rightmove

28 bedroom detached house for sale in Apperley, Gloucestershire, GL19 for £3,600,000. Marketed by Knight Frank, Cheltenham

Both gorgeous houses, but it baffles me how people can live it’s such wrinkly rugs!

Geneticsbunny · 24/12/2024 09:49

That is beautiful. I could quite happily live there. I would turn the outside space into a beautiful gardens and open it to the public and then sometimes hold weddings there to make money to keep it running. I would also run the main bit as a retirement home for my closest friends so that as people got older and needed more help, they could buy into the property and we would employ some people to help out.

SnapdragonToadflax · 24/12/2024 09:49

It's absolutely beautiful, I assume it needs plumbing/electric modernisation but I wouldn't change much about the look of it at all.

I suppose it probably will become a hotel, or more likely converted into apartments.

Can't say I noticed the rugs at all!

ApolloandDaphne · 24/12/2024 09:55

That's a gorgeous house and lots of land to create a stunning garden.

MrsSethGecko · 24/12/2024 09:57

Oh that's lovely. I would move straight in and hardly change anything.

Me too! (Suspect it might be chilly in the winter though).

Having just replaced the roof on my house after lots of issues, the first thing I always look at on a house is the roof (just look at photo 2!).That’s a lot of roof to maintain and some of it looks very complicated. I would want a simpler and more straightforward roof and just the one!

A 7m house isn’t really representative of London house prices.

MrsSethGecko · 24/12/2024 10:27

@sinckersnack freezing! But I would have a four poster bed and wear lots of faux fur and velvet and be fabulous.
(I write this as someone who lives in a council flat and wears lots of Primark!Grin)

mitogoshigg · 24/12/2024 10:31

@MrsSethGecko Grin

We can all dream

(From a modern townhouse which to be fair is very warm and energy efficient but lacks much outside space, my patio was larger at my last house)

TickingAlongNicely · 24/12/2024 10:36

Imagine the heating bill!

Just off to buy Euromillions tickets...

MrsSethGecko · 24/12/2024 13:37

I wish there was a picture of the kitchens.

DelphiniumBlue · 24/12/2024 15:35

Given that there are 24 bedrooms and numerous bathrooms, I'm wondering why the photos are only showing a few different rooms? Some of the photos are just close ups. There an opportunity to show so much more. Even if it's in poor condition, wouldn't it be better to be upfront about it?

IDontLikePinaColadas · 24/12/2024 15:39

I love that it’s being sold as it’s “surplus to requirements” - wouldn’t mind having that problem!

OccasionalHope · 24/12/2024 15:53

Weirdly there seem to be two separate kitchens.

The cost of running a house like that is phenomenal. There is therefore a limited market.

we are on the fortunate position of being able to afford a house in the same price bracket but have to rule out so many properties due to the cost of running them.

"...the cost of running them."

While nowhere near this price point, we were looking just after covid for a nice place with a few acres of land.

We didn't find anything appealing at all. Everything was incredibly bland or very old and very costly to run.

So, we went for a cheaper place (still with the land that we were looking for) and simply knocked it down and built exactly the house we wanted (which is also very well insulated etc).

Of course, we had to get planning permission etc which took quite a while to go through but, in the end, it meant we got the house we wanted without having to make any real compromises (except for our budget of course).

That may be another option for you?

Too much gardening work, not economical IMO.

mjf981 · 26/12/2024 00:36

I could see Princess Anne or maybe her daughter Zara living there.

That's a really interesting idea

The old people home? I came up with it when I was at uni. I thought that the thing I would like to do best when I am old is live with all my friends like we did in halls of residence, behave badly and have stupid themed nights and watch films together and stuff.

Sinkintotheswamp · 27/12/2024 09:12

I love the little shelved alcoves on the stairs. It's surprisingly bright and fresh looking for such an old fashioned home.
