What would you do?

Water dripping very slowly on corner of room I'm staying in.

Woke husband who's staying in next room along with toddler (I'm co sleeping with 3 month old) and he said it's too late to wake anyone up and to suck it up!!

What would you do?!

Can you collect it in a bucket? Or put a towel down? So at least the puddle is being contained.
is it coming from a pipe or the attic/roof? Hot tank?
Can your husband turn off the water coming into the house for the night?

Livinginadream · 22/12/2024 02:18

Yeah I wouldn't wake them but I'd get DH to find a bucket.

FinanceLPlates · 22/12/2024 03:35

Is it coming through the roof or from a pipe? Does it look like a new leak or are there signs that it might have happened before?

If it’s the roof there’s probably not much that can be done about it at this moment so I’d ask DH to find a bucket. Put a towel at the bottom of it to muffle the dripping sound and try to get back to sleep, tell in-laws in the morning.

If it could be coming from a broken pipe I’d want to do everything to stop it asap. So find the stopcock and switch off the water. If DH doesn’t know where it is I’d strongly suggest he wake his parents. I’m sure they’d rather be told than have to deal with worse consequences after the ceiling has got waterlogged.

Commonsenseisnotsocommon · 22/12/2024 03:42

He's going to have to be a big brave boy and go and wake his mummy and daddy to deal with it, or do it himself. You've no idea where the water is from or how long it's been sat there so you need it sorting now.

BiscottiToffee · 22/12/2024 03:44

Definitely wake them.

Even if it turns out to be nothing, it isn't your house. And ultimately, it's going to be their money that fixes it.

BobbleHatsRule · 22/12/2024 04:07

I'd be fuming if a guest didn't wake me! Water leaking above a ceiling could cause lots of damage unchecked

Ponderingwindow · 22/12/2024 04:14

Wake up the homeowners. This could be a sign of an incredibly serious problem. Delaying could cost them huge sums of money and weeks and repair.

the last drip I had quickly became a waterfall and took out my entire ceiling. Thankfully insurance stepped in, but the damage to our home and the interruption to our life was huge. If we had managed to get to the source of the leak before that transition, it would have made a huge difference.

Edingril · 22/12/2024 04:29

Sure i would report to them in the morning but no unless there is hurricane i do not see the need to wake them

I think between the 2 of you someone can find something for the water to go into till morning

Wot23 · 22/12/2024 11:02

if it was your own house and you found out the next morning that no action had been taken regarding leaking water how would you react?

This is not a moral dilemma debate, it is a common sense reaction of a property owner.

chocolateanddietcoke · 23/12/2024 07:59

In the end I put a towel down

told fIL in the morning and he said oh there was a leak a few years ago there but thought it was resplved

MIL was told when she was up and just said it’s been like that for years when wind blows certain way

Been with my husband for 11 years, to this day there has never been a door handle on the bathroom door. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised!
