Will a fridge work in an unheated area like a garage?

I need a tall larder fridge to be kept in a side return which is not insulated but has doors either end and a roof. It can get warm in the summer.

I know with a freezer you have to have a particular operating range or get a freezer to be ok in a garage (we currently have a fridge freezer in the space that I want to change to a fridge)

But a fridge on its own, will it cause problems if the room becomes really cold?

We have problems at the moment with things freezing at the back of the fridge but I dont know if that is because its old or not maintained well or because its a fridge freezer

This is the one time to look at Beko. They work at -15 degrees, or at least they did a few years back.

Yes we have Beko currently in the room, its a fridge freezer though

so "half" of them are larder fridges and as I said you need to check the technical spec, not just take that site's word they are listing only outbuilding ones

as for the second site the same applies again, they include both larder and "American" fridges

Well I meant that having looked the fridges up (and theres only two that are tall ones), theres no information about them, I have left lots of messages with various websites yesterday and in the past, you never hear from them!

@soupfiend sorry about the lateness of this. I can't find the model number of the fridge and the paper work is in the cupboard behind the Christmas tree but I will have a Google to find it. I know we got it from Currys. Not an experience I would recommend.

https://www.currys.co.uk/appliances/refrigeration/fridges/freestanding-fridges_larder-fridges?prefn1=searchFilter7&prefv1=Suitable%20for%20outbuildings

They don't have the same one as ours.... It has a water dispenser on the front but the link takes you through to larder fridges suitable for an outbuilding.

Its really weird that the only ones I can find so far, are both integrated, this would need to be free standing

Is it possible to have an integrated fridge but use it as freestanding?

Good grief Unescorted, three of the five fridges are a thousand pound plus. I don't think I would put one of those in an outbuilding, far too expensive! Shock

Although perhaps a thief would ignore the expensive fridge in favour of a rusty bike or cheap lawnmower 🤔

INeedAnotherName · 22/12/2024 23:07

Yes soupfiend, you can have an integrated as a freestanding one but you cannot have a freestanding one integrated. It's to do with airflow and overheating.

The trouble is I can only find fridge freezers (Beko) suitable for outbuildings and Its a tall fridge I need.

I have a Beko tall fridge and a tall freezer in my garage. They've been there for years. I bought them because they were suitable for the ambient temp.

Do they no longer do the tall fridge

greengreyblue · 23/12/2024 07:23

We have a second fridge/ freezer in our inheated garage. Never considered that this could be a problem .Works just fine.

greengreyblue · 23/12/2024 07:25

Just to add it was secondhand and no idea if it’s for outbuildings .

Yes there are many fridge freezers. The OP isn't wanting FF. they are wanting a full height standalone fridge

I have my freezer in the barn , no problems

BilboBlaggin · 23/12/2024 07:49

My DM has a small freezer in her uninsulated shed that works just fine. As long as the garage is watertight for the electrics then a fridge should be ok too. I rented a house that had a shed in the garden with a spare fridge freezer in it. We used it and that too worked as normal.

sorry but your comment is misleading as there most certainly is science behind why fridges need certain minimum ambient temperatures to operate "correctly".
Plenty of websites explain what the science is.

The OP isn't looking for a freezer 🤦🏻‍♀️

All the people posting on here about old fridge freezers may have used devices that used old gas technology. Due to regulations more modern ones have different gas requirements. It also makes a difference what part of the country you live in. There will be an option but you will have to search for it.

HarmonyHall71 · 30/04/2025 23:10

soupfiend, did you find anything suitable? We're trying to find a standalone fridge for our garage at the moment and I just saw this thread.

Feelingstrange2 · 01/05/2025 07:31

When we put our new kitchen in....in 1998! We had a spare fridge so put it in the garage. We also decided on a chest freezer...so put that in the garage too.

Nearly 30 years and we've had 2 chest freezers and we have literally just replaced the fridge - not because it died, we just fancied a new one.

Our garage is attached to the house and appliances on the wall that attaches to the house, but it's a single skin garage. We are in Cornwall so very low temperatures are not common.

We never meant to have 2 fridges permanently but it's brilliant for cold drinks in summer and holiday times when catering. The chest freezer allows for batch cooking and we live from garden produce which gets frozen.

Hope buying a new one doesn't cause issues!

I didnt even see this message sorry, no not yet, mostly information about freezers rather than fridges.
