Upgrade existing conservatory - recommendations and cost?

Hi All,

We are currently renovating our house. We have a fairly large conservatory but it's really old now and not fit for purpose (leaky, musty, too cold / too hot). We have plans drawn to take it away and replace with a brick built extension. The current conservatory foundations are not deep enough, so it's literally like starting again from scratch.

My husband suggested we look at replacing the windows, doors and roof of the conservatory to save on time and costs. It will be used as a sitting room / dining area. At first I was totally against the idea, but now I have been looking online and saw some design ideas that look really good!

I have sent a few enquiries to different companies but don't know where to start or if it's a good idea (or if we should just proceed with the brick extension we have planning for) Have you had this done? How much did it cost? Are you happy with the result? Would you recommend a company to look at? We are located in the South East.

Thank you!

I looked at doing this with my conservatory but the existing structure wasn't strong enough to take the weight of a proper roof. I decided to take the plunge and do a proper extension. I'm so glad I did. The new room is solid, secure and the right temperature all year round!

Hello I have the same question, we’ve moved into a house with a very old timber conservatory which is deteriorating, it’s off the lounge so don’t want to put a proper roof on to affect the light going into the lounge. The foundations look ok and we’ve had some costs for replacing the conservatory frame windows and roof and the cheapest quote is 15K.

Im wondering what the cost difference would be to go for a proper room instead? Although I am worries about the light.

HellsBalls · 22/12/2024 10:50

@Nic834 cost difference is massive. Removing the existing conservatory, the footings and the slab will be adding to the cost of building a proper extension. I don’t know prices, but having hung around enough threads on MN, you could be looking at the wrong side of £60k.
First thing is work out the square meters, and there are some rough online calculators.

@Nic834 i had the same worry about light so I did a sloping roof in my new extension with velour windows - it's fabulous!

The whole thing cost around £40k. I added it onto the mortgage and did overpayments.

We put cosypanels in our conservatory - you replace glass roof panels with solid panels - looks nice , keeps it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Was 6K and we are pleased with it .

A new roof would set you back between 6-15k depending if you want glass or a 'warm roof'
We have just been quoted 30k to fully upgrade existing 3 x 4m conservatory,

This includes:

  • new windows & frames
  • tiled warm roof
  • sliding patio doors
  • building a new dwarf wall
  • plastered finish with spotlights
  • 2 x velux footlights
  • all electrics
  • building control costs

I'm thinking we should pay the extra and have an extension but DH isn't keen on spending the extra. I estimate it would be about 60k

Thanks il google the windows now.

We paid £6k for an upgraded glass roof. It was already glass, but old tech. We now have new tech glass and it makes a huge difference. Better insulated, reflective, etc etc. Cooler in the summer, warmer in the Winter.

We have a very large conservatory with a complex roof structure (various sloping angles and two peaks).

We’ve been quoted £88k to remove it, redo the foundations and turn it into a proper extension.

£17k to get our 3.5 x 3.5m conservatory refurbished in 2023. This included two lots of french doors, all windows and a new eco glass roof. I’m really pleased with it and it’s used pretty much year round. Much better than the original conservatory, that was 20 years old.
We used this company and were very pleased with them. https://www.idealwindowsolutions.co.uk/

Can I ask if this included any foundation work or brick work at all?

Nigellasrockyroad · 29/12/2024 09:47

@Nic834 . No. The existing foundations and brickwork remained.

Thanks that sounds similar to what we’ve been quoted for replacement

Another option is the modular extensions that are made offsite then assembled.
They are made from insulated panels (sips)
Cheaper than a traditional extension but better insulated than a conservatory.
I'm going to look into these.

enniskerry · 11/11/2025 18:37

Hi. has anyone had a modular extension done recently? Or replaced a conservatory using the current foundations? I am wondering where to find decent information about both.
Thanks

Hello. Did you go ahead with your modular extension? I'd love to know how you got on. Thanks
