Dishwasher in a galley kitchen

Hello! maybe some dishwasher-savvy mumsnetters can come in my aid as i'm totally clueless!
We have recently moved to our first little house, and our galley kitchen is pretty tight - there are around 62cm between one row of cabinets and the one opposite. While i love our house, I feel like i spend half of my waking hours washing dishes, so i was wondering - do you think is there a chance we could be able to retro-install a slimline dishwasher next to the sink? I can't find anywhere what's the average slimline dishwasher' size when open, or even what is the minimum requirement when it comes to space in between the 2 rows of cabinets. Help!

Absolutely possible. A standard size dishwasher is 60cm wide and a slimline one 45cm. You can also get half height ones that sit on the kitchen worktop and plug into your tap / drain into your sink so no plumbing alterations, and could be moved when not in use. If you’ve not had a dishwasher in the kitchen before you’ll likely need to modify the plumbing and install a waste which are both a very easy job if you are DIY minded, but if not a handyman would be able to do for you in an hour or two.

In terms of when open, take the height of the dishwasher and use that as what the door will take up when fully down. Regular dishwashers are usually around 80cm tall so might present an issue for you. The compact size ones are 45cms ish tall so would definitely allow the door to fully open. A full height may still work as you will be able to pull the top drawer out fully, you just won’t be able to with the bottom one so you’d have to reach in the stack / remove things but it’ll likely still be a workable solution.

something like this:

The door on ours folds flat from the top and sticks out 72 cm into the room. So you would need to check individual appliances.

Maybe you could put a table-top dishwasher somewhere? If you don't have enough work surface some of them will just tuck in a cupboard.

I think you can get dishwashers that open like a drawer, that might be better for this situation. Mad expensive though, so hunt down a second hand one if budget doesn't allow new.

thank you so much for the replies! fab ideas, looks like it's either a second hand drawer one, or i might get the plumber in to see if we can fit a compact one under the countertop somehow.
Thank you all again, really appreciate it!

Fisher and pykle drawer dishwasher

A drawer dishwasher will be much better for your space

Mines smaller than this and I have an integrated slimline dishwasher next to the fridge. It's amazing - couldn't live without it now!

We had a handy man remove a single cupboard from under the worktop next to the washing machine, and change the plug socket behind the washer to a double.
I had initially been looking at slimline, but with the cupboard properly removed there was enough room for a full-sized one.
