maisonette

Strange one, my wife and I own and live in an upper floor maisonette, I suffer with anxiety, we don’t play loud music, don’t have parties, and don’t have children. Aside this we walk around and live our everyday lives, the washing machine is only one during the day and I purchased an anti vibration mat for it, should I worry about how much of this the lower neighbours can hear? Or am I just being paranoid. Also I need an experienced reputable builder to help me screw down some floorboards, south east DA7 area does anyone know anyone?

I suspect you are being paranoid.

Unless they have been complaining ?

MrTch · 16/12/2024 08:38

They complained once saying they could hear something at 3am, the lady said she is an extremely light sleeper, this is our office or second bedroom, my wife and do not use at that time, this now makes me fell nervous using this room late, say upto 11-12pm, I suppose they are lucky we don’t have a child who uses that room, should I feel as though I can’t walk around in that room late in the evening. The only thing I can do is lift the carpet and spend £100s on adding rock wall in-between the joists.

Umm I would ignore her. If you live in a flat you will hear your neighbours. It is inevitable.

MiraculousLadybug · 16/12/2024 08:41

Speaking as a very light sleeper, she needs a £5 packet of earplugs if she's that light of a sleeper. I wouldn't worry so much, she needs to solve her own problems here.

Yes I live in a flat and am a light sleeper. I use Loop ear plugs at night, they are great.

MrTch · 16/12/2024 13:26

Thank you everyone

Yes, if she is such a light sleeper, that sounds like her issue to do something about.

You have carpet. You don't have dc. You aren't jumping up and down on the floors throughout the day and night, and are generally being considerate neighbours.
If your downstairs neighbour is struggling, then it is her that needs to get herself some ear plugs or headphones, or to move to a detached property in the countryside.

I live in the upper floor maisonette - I have 2 kids; one who is a toddler who jumps off the sofa occasionally, runs around .. generally being a toddler, washing machine & tumble dryer on constantly - my neighbour has never complained in 15 years.
She said she's heard the washing machine once!

Ignore your neighbour - live your life
You're not hosting wild parties! It is normal household noise - she needs to deal with her problem of being a light sleeper; it is not on you to spend money doing something you don't have to or don't want to to appease someone else!

If they live in a ground floor maisonette then they will have to accept that from time to time they will hear the people who live above them

It's just life

The folk downstairs are lucky to have such considerate neighbours. Ask them to tell you of any serious problems, but you can't avoid them hearing you now and then. If you're worried a thick rug over the carpet works wonders.
