Non self-closing door hinges?

Hi. I know very little about DIY but I have a number of internal doors in my house that self close and it’s very annoying. They don’t need to self close due to fire regs or anything so I’m not seeking advice on that. Would changing the hinges work? If so, what type of hinge should I be getting? Many thanks.

why do you think the hinges are the self closing mechanism?
can you post a photo of them so we can advise correctly?

if they are the mechanism, then obviously replacing them solves the issue.

Thanks for the reply. I have attached a photo - it just looks like a normal hinge. I thought maybe there was a spring in the hinge or something because it literally immediately slams shut unless propped up. But maybe it’s just how the door hangs. Not sure. I have three doors that do this and two that don’t. It’s quite an old house.

There is normally a small hole for an allen key. if you turn that you effectively reduce the tension on the spring inside making it non self closing. There should be some videos on line. You just need a very small allen key.

Search adjusting self closing hinges and you should find a video. It should be straightfoward.

Thank you - I will try that!

those appear to be bog standard "butt" hinges.
if all 5 doors have the same hinge then the fact 3 self close is down to the likelihood they have been hung incorrectly.
There is no mechanism in that hinge to make them close, and I cannot see any other form of self closing mechanism on another part of the door

attached is a pic of a basic butt hinge (3 inch or 75 mm long)
to correct the hang of the door would require trial and error either packing out behind one or more of the hinges with "stuff" or moving the hinge itself to change the angle the door hangs at

You will find that its not the hinges or the door fitting , its the frames are out of plumb. Depends on which way that is will dictate whether the door will swing open or close.

Aha thank you for the advice! I’m so glad I consulted Mumsnet before buying new hinges. I will have a think about whether I can just learn to live with it…

Magnetic door stop! Game changer for us on crap doors that kept swinging shut.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/12/2024 22:11

You can get magnetic door stops that will catch the door when you open it and hold it open.

Aloneinmanchester · 14/12/2024 22:19

Ooh I’m off to google those
