Buying a Flat in Manchester

We don't live in Manchester but DS is looking to buy a two bed flat there for around £240,000, max £260,000. He WFH but would like to have better access his company's offices in Manchester.

Between estate agents who don't work on Saturdays and tenanted flats which are understandable difficult to view along with fire regs this search has proved challenging. It looks to us that New Islington would be ideal with great transport links and interesting places to meet new people.

However, it seems as if the freeholds across much of New Islington are owned by a company that is in administration and solicitors I'm talking to don't want to proceed with a purchase. Yet estate agents are telling me that flats are selling without problems.
Can anyone help me to understand better the problem of the freehold so that we can find him somewhere to live in Manchester.

I looked at buying DD somewhere to live around New Islington or Ancoats, but the service charges just looked excessive, for the length of time she might have lived in it (maybe 3-5 years if she bought) we just decided she's better renting for a year or two to get the inner city experience and buying a house further out later on. So sorry, that doesn't really help but I feel your pain!
