Rendering

Help, need advice please. I need to render a smallish repair to an exterior house wall fairly quickly. Fortunately I can reach it without ladders etc.

I'm going to buy some ready made render. What else do I need - a large bucket, tools? Anyone done this. I know I can google this but I'm looking to do a patch up and repair job and not a super professional job with top of the range equipment.

Anyone?

How big is the hole and how deep?
Most likely mix the render is a bucket, add the water slowly. As it’s heavy you need a square ended trowel. Don’t mix a whole bucket load in case you mess it up, so a quarter to big in with. Brush the hole you will render to remove the dust and anything lose. Then make sure to wet the surface and the edge of the old render, use a bucket and hand brush for that. Then trowel in the new render. Ensure you don’t try and do it in one go, if the render is too deep, it may just slump or roll off the wall. Better to build it up in 2 or more applications. If the tendered wall is smooth, use a piece of wood wider than the hole as a straight edge to level that last coat of render. If the existing render is rough, you have to improvise. Don’t forget, don’t try and do it in one hit. Easier to build it up over a few hours or couple of days.

HellsBalls

Thank you so much for answering this question. I'm going to re-read it as it is very useful. The rendering has completely come away, I am looking at exposed brickwork. It is not a massive area but needs protecting until, I can remove the other render around it which also appears to be peeling off.

Equipment required. Ready made render
A couple of buckets
A square ended trowel and
A pointed ended trowel to apply
Water and bristle brush.

Get a plasterer to sort it, you will never match it up perfectly if at all. Is it sand & cement render or silicon render? You will always be able to see a mark no matter how well you apply it, then it needs to be scraped back afterwards, if it is a large patch you need to apply mess behind the render. It may end up being cheaper to get a plasterer to chop out a larger section & reapply or if it is under a bay window remove it all & start again.
