Panelled 1930's balustrade

We have one in the house we're buying. It's sort of solid wood panelling rather than spindles. I actually quite like it but I have no idea what to do with it. Id probably have left it the original wood because I imagine it should be a sort of honeyed oak but unfortunately previous owner stained it a sort of mahogany colour so it will need to be painted. I'm really struggling to visualise what that will look like though. Has anyone got similar? Could you share a photo or idea please?

Has it just been added, could the spindles be underneath?

No I'm pretty sure it's original. This is not my staircase but it looks a bit like this

We have that in our house, although ours was painted white when we bought it. I'm pretty sure it's original and I don't think there are spindles underneath.

This is what it looked like on the estate agent's photos, sadly not that clear in the hall...

Thank you that is helpful. So I think we'll probably do similar and paint it white too. I would have liked to keep it wood if it hadn't been stained so dark.

It was probably the mahogany colour originally, dark mahogany was still the most popular for woodwork in the 1930s. The 1950s was the period where lighter wood became popular. Of course most dark wood has long since been painted white, our home is Edwardian when homes switched to the early incarnations of the styles you see in 1930s homes, mock Tudor and stained glass. Some paint had chipped off of our woodwork and I could see it was dark stained underneath. It’s a shame it all got painted, it can be warm and cozy, but it’s understandable.
