How cold will my house be?

About to complete on an Edwardian (single brick)terrace in London. Kitchen has been extended many years ago (single brick extension). All double glazed, mostly carpeted, roof is old so I doubt well insulated.

I have previously lived in an end terrace with alleyway between us and the neighbouring house. This was further north and it was FREEZING! BUT only two rooms actually were joined to next door - as opposed to all the rooms in the new house.

How cold will such an Edwardian terrace be? For context we like our flat to be about 22 degrees…will I have crazy heating bills?

No issue at all in my Victorian terrace. As mentioned- it's the single brick extension that you will feel it. But kitchens tend to b the warmest room in the house anyway.

Thanks! We are going to put a new roof on the extension with lots of insulation. Might internally insulate as well…

@Hellohowareyou112 consider having the external walls internally insulated. You don’t need to get the party walls done, just the front and back.

I think it will spoil the house’s character - I wonder about internally insulating the back of the house?

I'm in the process of buying a property in Wales. The walls are solid. The living room is 1650 square meters. 165 square meters by 10 metres tall. The whole house is 450 square meters living space. Slightly scared about heating bills. Heat the person, not the space. That's why radiant panel heaters above the sofa are the best option rather than trying to heat the whole space.

Obviously, we all live differently, but you could ask vendor how much they currently pay or previously paid.

Internal insulation to the external (front and rear) walls. Use insulated plasterboard.

Those radiant panels have been debunked as pretty useless as a primary heat source, as they can only heat line of sight.
What’s your plan to heat the house?

If you are wallpapering then have a look at insulated lining paper, it has a layer of polystyrene on the back so keeps walls warmer.

If you aren't heating all the rooms you probably want a dehumidifier to remove moisture in the air to avoid mould etc.

Thanks! I don’t think the oil radiators are too expensive to run if you have a thermostat on them?

They hold the heat well, and a lot of them have built-in thermostats.

For anyone interested the answer is - pretty toasty! Does cool down quickly though when heating turned off and haven’t had my first heating bill yet! Apparently average for the street is about 185.

So relieved as with my last Victorian end terrace (with alleyway which didn’t help!) it just didn’t get warm!

There are some nice blogs/articles etc about insulating edwardian houses.
Well worth doing it properly.
