What size boiler?

Our ancient Potterton Suprima 60L boiler has finally died it seems. We’ve replaced the circuit board which usually gets it going again but this time nada.
so it seems it’s time to replace it but what with? We have a Megaflo cylinder and it’s a 2 bathroom 4 bed house with 5 or 6 people a lot of the time.
No idea what we should be looking for and our usual plumber is really busy so feeling a tad lost. It’s money we will have to find too so the idea of spending thousands isn’t appealing. Our house is from the late nineties and from what I’ve read definitely not insulated enough to cope with a heat pump.
Any advice would be much appreciated as I’m worried we will get fleeced by someone unscrupulous who can see how little we know and the weather is so cold.

If you're plumber is so busy they can't advise you on the best installation for your house size and water requirements, then I'd ask others for advice and quotes. Ask around locally for recommendations.

I think it'll be hard for many on here to advise without the above information and knowledge of various systems.

I do know Worcester Bosch and Valliant are generally considered to be some of the better boilers though.

Why don't you get BG and or Boxt in to give you a quote ?

Their prices might not be the cheapest but they will give you a baseline to work with.

Independents can be a bit random. Often they are cheaper. But if they don't want the work sometimes they can quote silly money.

Any decent plumber will be able to size based on the number of radiators in your house. TBH a more powerful boiler won't probably cost that much more than a lower power one - a significant proportion of the cost is more on the labour on install. Most of the reason for sizing correctly is so that they run efficiently.

My guess is that any boiler you fit will be a lot more efficient than something from the late 90s which is probably non condensing and only about 60-70% efficient.

The replacement for your Suprima looks to be one from the Suprima HE range if you’re happy staying with Potterton.

We have a 35kw condenser that runs the heating and will run two showers at the same time. 4 bed, 2 bathroom, 16 rads and 5/6 people.

The Boxt website asks you questions and tells you which boiler to get. They have Worcester Boscht.

If you go with Boxt, PM me and I can give you a code for £100 off.

(I went with them for the option to pay interest free in instalments.)

Are you oil or gas?

You can look up the capacity of your old Potterton & then find the modern equivalent for a ballpark figure.
