Think the locking mechanism has gone in my UPVC door

Arrghh. I went outside the day it snowed (and freezing) to put some rubbish in the bin. Came back in, locked the door, and now I can’t open the door (from either side). Gave the lock a squirt of WD40 and the key turns but it seems to be the actually lock part that isn’t budging. UPVC door with numerous locking devices up and down its length.

Can a locksmith fix it and what sort of price should I be looking at? Don’t want to have to get a new door!

It's possible to replace the whole locking mechanism. Ours broke when it was only 2 years old so I called the door company and they came to replace it free of charge, but I think it was only a couple of hundred pounds if the door had been much older.

Not sure how universal those door parts are but maybe try a locksmith and if he can't do it then a local door company? Worth a try, as a whole new UPVC door is ££££!

Call a locksmith we’ve had problems with doors in the past and they willing come out and fix it.

Ours sticks in very cold weather. Maybe try again tomorrow if it’s milder and then take a view on it?

You can replace it yourself. You just need to unscrew it (2 screws on the inside door) and a screw on the bit where you open it...like open the door and they'll be another screw there. You can then take the whole lock out...see what you've got (how deep it is) and buy a replacement lock. Slot new one in. And then screw UPVC handle back in place. The locking mechanism up the door is just linked to the stick thing you will find when you unscrew the handle.

You can also replace the handle just make sure the measurements of the distance between the screws, handle and lock are the same.

As per above, replacing the thing isn’t the hardest job in the world. You just need a screwdriver. Problem you may have is that if you can’t get the door to open at all then you likely won’t be able to take the lock out as the locking mechanism will still be engaged. Locksmith will absolutely be able to sort for you, but cost will depend on how jammed it all is / the hours taken to sort it. Bit of a how long is a piece of string question I’m afraid.

Kaleidoscopic101 · 24/11/2024 18:56

Oh haha my mistake...yes sounds like a locksmith will need to address this then.

ToastyToesandWarmHugs · 28/11/2024 12:28

Still not working so I’ve called a locksmith. Quoted up to £400 plus VAT depending on how bad it is 😩

I'm thinking of becoming a locksmith.

NonmagicMike · 28/11/2024 13:15

I imagine they are thinking they’re going to need to drill out the lock barrel and then make good. How old are the doors? Might not be that much more expensive to just replace if they are needing doing in the near future anyway. Will depend on the size of course. A small set of pvc will be very different to if it’s a 4 meter wide aluminium set….

Ours went in exactly the same way OP. We got a whole new door (the door was damaged in other ways so we never bothered with a locksmith).

Cost £2,800 all in, for new door, door furniture and surround.

Skullduggeryfizz · 29/11/2024 10:09

I had 2 of these types of door and both locks jammed, I also had 10 windows were at least 1 of them wouldn't open. I kept putting off getting them fixed. When I did it cost me about £700, a lot of money but it makes me smile everything I can open a door or window properly. I used a local locksmith who was great.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 29/11/2024 10:13

It might be worth looking at local door suppliers. Depending on how old it is, they can often fit a new mechanism.

ToastyToesandWarmHugs · 29/11/2024 19:24

Fixed.
