How to stop ripping clothes on sharp corners of our new door things

We got new doors in our house recently and that included new metal bits in the door frame for the door handle mechanism thing to go into.

They all have sharp corners sticking out and we keep tearing clothes, catching on them!
How can make them less sharp - is there sandpaper for metal or would a metal file work?

The fitter should have cut out a section of the wooden doorframe and sunk the metal into the wood. It should be flush with the surface of the frame, not sticking out at all. Can you post a photo?

We had loads of now sores last year and none have sharp bits sticking out. They have all been made flush to the door. It sounds like your joiner has cut corners or been a bit crap. I'd get them back to fix the issues.

Doors not sores!

Can you attach a photo? I'm thinking these haven't been fitted correctly.

Quick fix - walk through the centre of the door frame? I've looked at our doors- the part you mentioned is rounded (no sharp edges) and slightly curved in towards the door frame. There is no way I could catch my clothes on it - even if I was wearing a billowing organza ball gown! I think you need to get the door fitter back to rectify it....

Our strike plates did this. We ruined several items of clothes, and the kids scraped their arms. We’re in a new build, and eventually got the after sales team to deal with them. They bent the plates back slightly with a mallet. Doesn’t look much different, but has definitely solved the problem.

Thanks everyone so far!

Here is a photo:
It's the sticking out bit on the left that's causing problems. (I know we also need to paint the door frames.)

They did the doors in April - can I still get him to come back now or is it too late?
He also messed up one of the doors (had to shave some of the edge off as the door frame isn't square. The door is chipboard with a thin layer of oak and he went down to the chipboard.
However I went into the labour while he was finishing them off and we've been so busy since then with other house stuff and the baby and toddler we haven't followed it up.

Well they look sunk into the wood but he's made a terrible mess! I can see the bit you mean, the metal on the edge looks to have a sharp corner. You can see here, ours are more rounded. Yes, a metal file should help those, or replace with better quality ones.

I've just looked at some of ours, and they are considerably more rounded at the corners than that. I suspect that the fitter used the cheapest fittings he could get his hands on, and they are not very good quality.

Maybe unscrew one and take it to a local builder's merchant and ask their advice about whether they have a better alternative in stock. It would be fairly easy to replace the existing fittings with new ones the same size but more rounded at the edges.

My DP is a joiner and has looked at the photo, he says there is no facings on your door frame which would hide the sticking out part, if there is not enough space for facings you can get 1/4 beading that would could take up the space and stop it sticking out.
Were the new doors thinner than old doors?

Thanks for showing it to your partner.
I don't think the new doors are thinner than the old. We changed the side that the doors to maximise space in the rooms and that meant replacing the door stops on the door frames.

Following this thread I have just gone and severely bashed our own sticking out metal monster - it was sticking straight out, no bend in at all and had destroyed quite a few pieces of clothing including a brand new jumper.

It is now properly bashed into place - it really is quite sharp on the edges though and quite thin.

Would you recommend the bashing approach? What did you use?

The thread was triggered this morning by my husband tearing an expensive cycling jacket. It did make me laugh when @SleepingisanArt suggested walking through the middle of the doorway! Excellent point - I would've assumed we were already doing that until we got this problem! Never realised how poor our technique was

I used a rolling pin initially (wooden) but this wasn't working well - and the sharp edges was cutting bits of wood off.

I then got the long metal sharpening steel and used it as a lever to bend the sticking out bit backwards.

I am hoping there will be no more clothing accidents.

Good luck - hope you solve it.

MyCatIsBeautiful · 22/11/2024 22:35

we had that. Kept scraping my arm. Just get a hammer and tap it back so it’s not so straight out. It helped a lot.
