New neighbour with barking dog. WWYD?

We have a Jack Russell X that barks at anything he thinks is in our garden, like the window cleaners long brushes over the back, or seeing next door through the fence.

I know how annnoying barking dogs are so we only put him outside for as long as it takes to do his business, then bring him in. We can't leave the back door or window open because he barks which is a pain but that's our problem and I don't think it's fair to infict him on anyone else.

A woman has moved in 2 doors down with a black lab. Every morning she puts him in the garden at about 7am and leaves him out there until (I assume) they go to work/ school. He has a really loud deep bark and he lets off a volley of barks every morning at 7 I am woken up by it now every day.

The second our dog sets foot outside our back door the lab starts to bark. Sets ours off. If I go to put washing out the lab barks. It can't even see into our garden! When it barks they don't bring it indoors, and their back door is open whenever they are in.

To add to this, we also have new neighbours next door on the other side and they have a big dog too. If it goes in the garden when the lab is out the lab barks, it barks back and every dog on the estate starts up. (don't have any problem with their dog as it doesn't bark unless the lab starts it)

I haven't said anything to the lab's owners because they haven't been in long and I thought the dog would settle down. It hasn't. Everyone else brings their dog indoors if it barks- the fact that they don't suggests talking to them is going to be awkward. Any opening line I can think of sounds confrontational.

Do we just grit our teeth and put up with it? WWYD? (it's out in the garden barking again as I type..) We can't hear dogs through the walls so it's only if they are outside, or if it's barking indoors and you are outside that it's a problem.

Talk to them about it.

My neighbours had annoying barking dogs - drove me nuts too

My plan of action was to chat to the neighbours who also found it annoying. We all spoke to the barking dog owner individually - got nowhere so we complained to the council, who sent a letter which seemed to do the trick

I hope you get it sorted before it drives you nuts

I'm going to talk to them, but what do I say? I don't want to get into a row on the doorstep.

You say: "Hello, I hope you're settling in OK. I'm Evenhope and I live a couple of doors away. I hope you don't mind me mentioning it, but your dog does seem to bark quite a lot - I can't even go out into my garden without setting him off and he wakes up my children [always better to say disturbs children rather than you] every morning when you put him out. I do sympathise because my Jack Russell is as bad which is why we keep him in early in the morning. Would it be possible to limit the time your dog is outside or put him out a little later? It would be really appreciated."

I am going through the same with my next doors neighbours dog. They go to work about 6am, lock him outside and don't let him in until early evening.

At the minute the weather here is beautiful and I would love nothing more than to go out and read, but, I know that if I do he will just bark and bark and bark, he NEVER stops, I can't even have the back door and radio on as he hears the noise and starts up again

evenhope · 29/04/2008 18:07

lalalonglegs that's brilliant, thanks

lovemyshoes it's dire isn't it. Have you complained?

No, not yet, but believe me I will be. Last summer I was lucky enough to be off on a couple of the nice days (dh bought me a swing seat so I could sit and read outside), but, everyday I did the bloody dog would bark and bark and bark.

I'm going to give it another couple fo week, then, I am going drop them a note, advise them it needs sorting within 7 days, otherwise I am going to report them

I had a friend over a few weeks back with a barking dog who we put in the garden as my DTs were only a few weeks old and we were not sure how well the dog would behave. Dog barked a lot. Within an hour we had a neighbour knock on the door to (politely) complain, and then 20 mins later the police arrived .

Thankfully dog went home so no problems but not sure what you do if dog is staying for the long term.

Think lalalonglegs has got the best suggestion...

For months, I put up with a neighbour's dog barking as it was left outside all day whilst they were at work. I didn't want to casue any upset by mentioning it (although it was, of course, upsetting me!). Then, a new neighbour moved in, clearly thought bs to that, and had a quiet word. The neighbour was horrified as she hadn't realised..... dog taken in immediately. Problem solved. I didn't know whether to be pleased at the result, or furious that I hadn't done the same thing months earlier!

mumblechum · 01/05/2008 12:19

We have the same problem and don't understand how it doesn't drive the owners mad as well.

Bought a device which is supposed to send the dog a subsonic screech to shut it up but it doesn't work

lovemyshoes · 01/05/2008 19:37

I have one of my best mates moving in soon for a while, and to say she is not backwards at saying what she thinks is an understatement.

She'll get it sorted straightaway, I have too short a fuse with them at the minute with other things they are doing
