We live just north of York, and we love it! How old are your children?
Do you have a car, or do you need somewhere close to the city centre etc?
I'll happily tell you all about it

Tinker · 28/04/2008 19:00

We recently stayed in a cottage in Tollerton which was about 10/12 miles outside of York. Really lovely with lots of other similarly sweet villages en route to York.

ELR · 28/04/2008 19:48

hi bottersnike would love to know everything about it!!!
i can drive have dd 5 in reception and ds who is 2
dh either going to commute to leeds or work from home and then into london 1-2 days per week

oooh ELR - might start stalking you. We are thinking exactly the same - although late 2009 rather than now. And my children are different age to yours (older) so its unlikely that i'll properly stalk you - but i will look at your answers with interest.

clifton is the poshest bit with some beautiful houses

Osbaldwick is a bit remote and the other side of a motorway from the city

Heslington is where the University is - and though its not a massive place, there is a lot of student accomodation / rented houses around there.

ELR · 02/05/2008 11:39

i thought clifton was supposed to be the dodgy bit near to tang hall now i am confused or is that cliffton moore?
i also heard that anywhere near the hospital is a not so good place but by the univarsity was ok? is this correct?
Kizzie will overlook the stalking as i may need to stalk you at some point!!

Clifton is not nice. Sorry poodle.
Were you thinking of Bootham?

Heslington is lovely inparticular the village near the University.
Fulford again is lovely too and good schools but it can get very busy because its so close to the A64 and you get alot of backlog traffic running through the main road.

Stockton Lane and the top end of Heworth is lovely. There is Hempland School there which is very good.

Tang Hall, Foxwood/Gale Lane, Clifton not so great areas really.

ELR · 02/05/2008 13:37

thanks i thought so,
we are looking at fulford or heslington what else do they have in the villages with regard to local shops ect

Heslington has lots because of the uni - but you are also overrun with students for part of the year - there's a post office, two pubs, banks galore. Fulford also has shops - but there alot more spread out - it's good for access to the A64 though. Re Clifton - the area immeditaely around Clifton Green itself is very nice - with shops too. This links up to Bootham which is also fine. But then Clifton itself is well dodgy and Clifton Green school id 'improving' A bit further out you get Rawcliffe which is ok but deadly dull! As you are looking at commutes I think you need to be near the station so I think you want to look at the South Bank/Bishopthorpe Road area. Very family friendly. A couple of good schools - Scarcroft and Knavesmire. Loads of shops, walkable into town and some lush housing stock. If I get time I'll come back and link for you. Also - near the hospital is very variable -there are some good sized family houses in the Groves - and some good schools - but it's all on the street parking and lots of student houses too. Ok for getting to the station and walking into town though - and family friendly.

ELR · 02/05/2008 17:16

cheers, not too bothered about near station as dh has a motorbike so he can hop on it and park up, or i can take him to station as it would only be one morning. Really looking for a house with a largeish garden so too close to city is mainly terraced and town houses.
Thinking deff fulford now as want to be in catchment for Fulford and also mum got caravan at Acaster Malbis plus there is that fab retail outlet!!
Scarcroft and Knavesmire do look like good schools and you never know some of those houses around there are pretty nice

Well Fulford, it goes right up to the Bingo hall I believe???
Which is literally 5 mins walk from the city walls so your very near town.

On the main road in Fulford there is a co-op type shop (forget the name), a gorgeous beer and cheese shop which is just off the main road, police station, army barracks, further down you have a few takeaways, little hotel/b&b's and as you get to the a64 you have the McArthur Glen outlet.

I know where that caravan place is at Acaster Malbis too. Its lovely.
If you chose the Tadcaster Road/South Bank/Knavesmire area you would be at the right side of the city to get there and also your Dh would be further north for commuting to Leeds.

poodlepusher · 02/05/2008 18:24

sorry, my info must just be very out of date. I lived there as a student until the early 90's. now feeling VERY OLD indeed.

kayzisexpecting · 02/05/2008 18:27

Dh is from York and he says Clifton isn't very nice place to live. Don't live in Bell farm or Tang Hall.

Fulford is very very nice. Haxby is a lovely place.

We live in Pickering which is near York.

Nbg · 02/05/2008 18:30

lol poodle

FWIW, my nan lives in Clifton. She moved there with my grandad back in 1982 and at that time Clifton was quite a nice area but since then they have set up a Gypsy camp which brings no end of trouble and they have built on all the old fields where the old bomb shelters used to be.
Its changed quite alot.

beautifuldays · 02/05/2008 18:36

york is fab! i love it, i lived there for 3 years and am still trying to persuade dh to move up there

fulford is nice and fulford primary was nice when i worked there, heslington is nice but full of uni students, avoid tang hall like the plague, south bank/bishopthorpe rd/scarcroft rd area is good, and schools good i think. i lived in south bank and i liked it, plenty of local shops, 10 mins walk to town, 10 mins walk to station etc.

can i stow away in your lugggage please?

kayzisexpecting · 02/05/2008 18:37

Bishopthorpe is also very very nice.

ELR · 02/05/2008 19:45

thanks everyone just need to sell up in london now!! i am sick of living here cant wait to move back up north

this is nice but watch out for secondary catchment

I think this is in the catchment for fulford

this is in a good area but again watch out for secondary schools - very handy for the golf course though

Heslington - but you'd get more space elsewhere for your money

great location but not a lot of garden - pretty yummy though

needs work but good location

had you considered Copmanthorpe - secondary is Tadcaster Grammer and the primary is nice

great houes, fab location, no garden

yum!
