Is this impossible??

Looking for ideas on where a single person can live within 1hr of central London that won't cost more than 1500 - including the travel into central London 5 days a week. Is this even possible. Never lived anywhere but the north so have no idea on areas to look at. Obviously the further out you go the more expensive travel becomes. Am I fooling myself that this might be possible?

Yes - parts of East London. Depends on your expectations.

Try around Stratford, Wast Ham, Canning .town, Forest Gate etc further along Elizabeth Line

Monthly travelcard is £400 so you would go a bit over.

Would you consider finding a flat mate and sharing? You can get a 2 bed house in Epsom for £1800.

That looks doable. Thanks.

Can't house share for various reasons.

No expectations. Don't need much. Just trying to work out if it's doable.

What areas of east London do you suggest. I have no knowledge of London whatsoever.

LIZS · 17/11/2024 15:15

When you say cost do you mean just rent and the travel? What about the Council Tax, Utlities and Insurances - are you expecting them on top?

whosaidtha · 17/11/2024 16:21

@Feelingstrange2 I know they'll be untilities etc on top. Just looking for rent and travel for £1500. I can calculate the rest after.

Look outside the capital as well.

Folkestone has a direct line to Kings Cross and the train takes about 50 minutes.

Can you try asking to WFH some of the time to cut down on travel costs?

(a) it's tiny - you're sleeping on the sofa and (b) it's above an off-licence.

It's not the kind of job that you can do from home unfortunately.

If you have no idea where best to live its best to look at the regular travel route you will be taking.

If you are working at St Pancras you are in a good position as there are lots of options - including places that arent on the tube as these tend to be a bit cheaper/ you get more for your money but can still live in London proper.

The Thameslink train line is good and will take you up to St Pancras easily so have have a look at places in South London- somehwere like Loughborough Junction (SE5), Tulse Hill (SW2), Herne Hill (SE24) or Streatham (SW16) are cheaper than North London and you can get to St Pancras in under 30 minutes on the Thameslink trains which at peak times are every 15 minutes or so. Make sure you are less than 10 minutes walk from the station and you should be fine. They are also good places to live and outside of work times good to go out in or close to other places.

Travel is around £7-8 daily or a weekly travelcard is around £40
