What order to do things in new house?

Hi all! We are (hopefully!) going to be exchanging to buy our dream home very soon. The house is less than 10 years old so nothing in terrible shape but it's not all to our taste. We are planning to live here for a long time (possibly forever!) and I'm so excited about making it our own. So we are planning to do the following (none are urgent). What order would you do these things? I tried to research it but I got conflicting advice e.g. some saying you should always paint first and some saying paint last! Also I don't know whether fitted shelving etc should be done first or last?

Replace spotlights (they're in every room and I'm not keen - happy to keep in kitchen but otherwise want to replace with ceiling fittings).
Add wall lighting in some rooms
Add a sliding door between lounge and dining room area
Paint throughout
Replace grey laminate(?) flooring downstairs with parquet wood
Install custom fitted wardrobes in dressing room
Install custom fitted shelving in both of our home offices (they're top floor attic so want to make use of the odd shape for shelves)
Install new carpets throughout first and second floor
Replace tiles in a couple of bathrooms

Thank you so much for any guidance MNetters!

Oh and I guess also linked to that... some people say do a room at a time, but if you're having the same flooring throughout ground floor, and then same flooring (but different to ground) throughout first and second floors, doesn't that mean you should do all the flooring in one go?

Well you do dirty jobs first. So cutting holes in the ceiling and changing tiles dirty.

Then paint, then flooring. But then you struggle with the skirting or beading, or fitted things. So I would make those decisions room by room.

You may need to replaster the ceilings if the current lights are cut into them. A good rule of thumb is start at the top of a room and work down so ceiling then light fittings etc.paint before you put flooring down.

Do the wood flooring, creating the new door, and the electrics first. Other things don’t create as much mess. If you’re replacing flooring you’ll need to replace the skirting as well or you’ll end up with beading, which will ruin the finish. Paint last.

So messy jobs need to be done first.

Replacing spots with ceiling fittings could potentially be v messy as if they're cut into the plaster (this is very likely) you may need to get the ceilings replastered. Adding wall lighting could be messy as it may mean the walls need chasing out to add the electrics. You'll need to get an electrician round to advise. Adding sliding doors between rooms - if this is removing a wall then very messy job.

Best to leave carpets and flooring until last as you don't want them getting paint drips or scrapes and scratches from work being done.

And yes it is generally more economical to do things 'in bulk' ...so doing all carpets at once rather than a room at a time, but there are also benefits of just focusing on one room at a time as well, it really depends on the house and budget and what you prefer.

Good luck!
